Question and Answer

  • Question

What is your approach to teaching?

    Answer

I believe higher education is more than content mastery. It includes expanding your knowledge about society and the world, and growing maturity as an individual. I work hard to create a learning environment that fosters critical thinking and problem solving. All students need to understand not only the facts presented in books and lectures, but the questions they need to ask based on the information they learn. I expect students to become self-directed learners, engaging their natural curiosity about the material presented and taking that curiosity to the next level. I see myself in the classroom as the springboard for their exploration.

  • Question

Would you list some recent accomplishments?

    Answer

    Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, TNCC

Scholarly project: "Caregiver Stress: Aromatherapy to Decrease Burnout"

  • Question

What inspires you as a teacher?

    Answer

Inspiration comes from many places, and sometimes you don't know where that will come from. Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unsuspecting places. I work hard on my self-awareness, and personal growth, and hope to pass that on to my students.

  • Question

How would you describe what happens during one of your most successful classes?

    Answer

When I have a student where the information finally clicks, and they are able to teach someone else the how or why something happened, the feeling of success I feel is strong.

  • Question

What makes your curriculum interesting or valuable to students?

    Answer

Students enjoy hearing real-life stories from the emergency room. It provides for great discussions and learning opportunities.

  • Question

How do you think students describe your teaching methods and classes?

    Answer

I present information through interactive teaching aids and experiential learning opportunities. I bring in real-world examples through personal stories of patient care and ask my students how they would handle specific situations. At the beginning of each semester, I explain that I expect students to take an active role in their learning, asking questions and going beyond the material presented in class. I keep track of which students participate or ask questions. I also request feedback from students about my presentation of materials. I regularly stress my commitment to continual improvement and encourage students to give me feedback. Through these methods, I hope to exceed their expectations as an instructor.

  • Question

What are some ways that you help students succeed when they need extra help?

    Answer

Education is not a one-size-fits-all discipline, and I believe it is essential that my approach is tailored to the specific learning needs of each student. I get to know the students as individuals so I can appropriately support and challenge them academically. I see my role as not only providing answers but encouraging students to ask the important questions. I prioritize my relationship with them and model the behaviors I want to see in students through good communication and a genuine interest in understanding other perspectives.

  • Question

How do you help your students get the most out of your class?

    Answer

Participation is so important to your learning. Read and ask questions! I don't know all the answers but will help you find the resources you need.
