English Transfer Pathway Degree

Program Information

The English Transfer Pathway AA offers students a powerful option: the opportunity to complete an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts & Sciences degree with course credits that directly transfer to designated English bachelor’s degree programs at Minnesota State universities. The curriculum has been specifically designed so that students completing this pathway degree and transferring to one of the seven Minnesota State universities enter the university with junior-year status. All courses in the Transfer Pathway associate degree will directly transfer and apply to the designated bachelor’s degree programs in a related field.

  • Minnesota State Transfer Pathways offer students curriculum that is designed to fully transfer to a parallel program at one of seven universities in the Minnesota State system:

    • Bemidji State University: English Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree
    • Metropolitan State University: English Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree
    • Minnesota State University, Mankato: English Studies Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree
    • Minnesota State University, Moorhead: English Writing Emphasis Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, English Emphasis in Integrated English & Publishing Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree
    • Southwest Minnesota State University: English Literature Emphasis Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, English Creative Writing Emphasis Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree
    • St. Cloud State University: English Creative Writing Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, English Rhetoric & Writing Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, English Studies (General) Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, English Linguistics Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, English Literature Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree

  • By completing this program, students will achieve the following learning goals:

    Content Area 1: Introduction to Literary Studies

    1. Perform close analysis of literature at an introductory level;
    2. Demonstrate knowledge of major critical frameworks at an introductory level;
    3. Employ major critical frameworks to analyze literature at an introductory level;
    4. Incorporate and document secondary sources at an introductory level;

    Content Area 2: Literature Survey

    1. Demonstrate knowledge of canonical works of British/American literature;
    2. Demonstrate knowledge of major genres and styles in British/American literature;
    3. Demonstrate knowledge of major periods and historical developments in British/American literature;

    Content Area 3: Diverse Literature

    1. Demonstrate knowledge of literature of underrepresented populations;
    2. Demonstrate understanding of canon formation as a reflection of historical, social, and cultural contexts;

    Content Area 4: Writing for Specific Purposes

    1. Demonstrate discipline-specific knowledge of audience and rhetorical situations;
    2. Create discipline-specific documents that employ effective techniques for specific writing situations; and
    3. Engage in guided revision and/or writing workshops.
    • A minimum of 60 semester credits in courses numbered 1000 or above.
    • A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in courses numbered 1000 or above at ARCC.
    • Some students may need preparatory courses in the areas of English, mathematics or reading. Courses numbered below 1000 will not apply toward this degree.
    • Satisfy residency requirements. 
    • A minimum grade of C must be earned in all program requirements.
    • Completion of specific degree requirements.
    • Each state university has specific program requirements for completion. Please speak with your advisor about requirements at receiving institutions.

    Complete at least 30 credits in courses from the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC), including all courses listed. You must complete at least one course in six (6) of the 10  goals. One course may satisfy more than one goal, but the course credits may only be counted once.

  • The following two-year Pathway Plan is suggested for full-time students. Part-time students will need more time to complete this pathway.
