“This is a truly beautiful play about transforming music, relationships, stories and even the characters into ‘our better selves’ as they say in the script,” said Lisa Weaver, director and college Faculty member. “I am very excited to have Music Faculty member Liz Kuivinen play the 33 Variations on stage during the production. It gives us a window into Beethoven's genius and how music is composed. The play lets us be there and see, hear and understand ideas and theories about how he worked and created. I also love the back and forth between a contemporary setting and the early 1800s and how, in some scenes, the two time periods blend and flow together.”
More about 33 Variations by Moises Kaufman
33 Variations focuses on a mother coming to terms with her daughter and a composer coming to terms with his genius. Though they're separated by 200 years, the mother and composer share an obsession that might, even just for a moment, make time stand still. Drama, memory and music combine to transport the audience from present-day New York to 19th-century Austria in this extraordinary new American play about passion, parenthood and the moments of beauty that can transform a life.
