College welcomes esteemed writers Nov. 16 and Dec. 1

Anoka-Ramsey Community College is hosting two noteworthy writers: Jon Bream, a popular music critic for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and Bao Phi, a performance poet.

The events are free, and the public is encouraged to attend.

Bream has covered popular music for the Minneapolis Star Tribune since 1974, giving him the second longest tenure of any current daily newspaper pop-music critic in the U.S. He writes about all styles of music except classical. He wrote the acclaimed Whole Lotta Led Zeppelin: The Illustrated History of the Heaviest Band of All Time, Neil Diamond is Forever: The Illustrated Story of the Man and His Music and the best-selling biography, Prince: Inside the Purple Reign. Bream will discuss his new book, Dylan: Disc by Disc.

A two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist, Phi’s new poems deal with his history as a Vietnamese refugee born during war and raised in the Phillips neighborhood in south Minneapolis through his newly formed lens of being a man of color raising a daughter. The New York Times said of his work, "In this song of his very American self, every poem Phi writes rhymes with the truth."
