Bemidji State prepares first graduates from B.S. in Business Administration program offered at Anoka-Ramsey’s Coon Rapids Campus
November 10, 2016
In December, a group of ten students will be the first to graduate from the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Business Administration program offered at Anoka-Ramsey Community College Coon Rapids Campus by Bemidji State University.
The program was implemented nearly two years ago through a partnership between Anoka-Ramsey and Bemidji State to allow students to save time and remain close to home as they complete a four-year degree.
“The transition from Anoka-Ramsey classes into Bemidji classes was so easy,” said Emilie Bergman, a student in the program now preparing to graduate in December. “Not only am I getting the degree I want, I was able to continue living at home and keep my job while I finished the program. Best of all, I will graduate without any debt!”
Bergman (Coon Rapids, Minn.) will be joined in the December graduation by Laurie Cancino (Corcoran, Minn.), Sam Dulian (Coon Rapids, Minn.), Brendon Edwards (Spring Lake Park, Minn.), Jessica Gunderson (Spring Lake Park, Minn.), Devan Maher (Ham Lake, Minn.), Adam Muehlhauser (Cambridge, Minn.), Rachel Plankers (Ham Lake, Minn.), Carolyn Sem (Blaine, Minn.) and Kyle Wojciehowski (Ham Lake, Minn.)

Developing a new model of learning
The B.S. in Business Administration at Anoka-Ramsey is modeled after Bemidji State’s accredited B.S. degree program at their Bemidji Campus. All classes are held during the daytime at the Anoka-Ramsey Coon Rapids Campus at a lower cost than other credit transfer options. Students have the option between a Management or Marketing emphases and full-time, in-residence faculty teach all upper-division courses.
“Many assume that a student will go to community college for two years, stop completely, then move on to attend a university for two more years,” said Bemidji State advisor and program instructor Dr. Dean Frost, who was instrumental in establishing the curriculum and schedule for this program. “That model is really challenging for our students, It’s important to recognize that our students benefit from having a smooth, subtle transition between their two- and four-year program. By taking both community college and university courses simultaneously, students are shifting between the two colleges gradually.”
Other four-year degrees offered through Anoka-Ramsey Campuses on the Cambridge Campus:
- Bachelor in Arts (B.A.) in Business: Concordia University
- Bachelor in Science (B.S.) in Nursing: Bemidji State University
- Bachelor in Arts (B.A.) in Psychology: Concordia University
- Bachelor in Science (B.S.) in Special Education: Minnesota State University Moorhead
Other four-year degrees offered through Anoka-Ramsey Campuses on the Coon Rapids Campus:
- Bachelor in Science (B.S.) in Business Administration: Bemidji State University
- Bachelor in Science (B.S.) in Business Administration: Metropolitan State University

“Offering baccalaureate degrees on our Coon Rapids and Cambridge campuses addresses the needs of our students,” said Deidra Peaslee, Vice President of Academic Affairs. “Many of our students are geographically immobile or unable to move to another city to continue their education due to jobs or family. These degree offerings allow students to seamlessly continue their educations on our campuses, removing some barriers to completion.”
