Cybersecurity degree now offered at Anoka-Ramsey Community College

June 27, 2018

Building on the Information Technology programs, Anoka-Ramsey Community College will offer a new Associate of Science in Cybersecurity beginning in the fall.

Students who enroll in the Cybersecurity degree program will gain a strong foundation in computer and network security, learning about concepts, design principles, policies, laws and security threats. They’ll study the impacts technology has on individuals and organizations including security and ethical issues. Students will also learn to configure and administer systems and networks while monitoring vulnerabilities and using defensive techniques.

“There’s a huge cybersecurity workforce shortage,” said Networking and Security Instructor Corey Blommel, who helped usher in the new program at Anoka-Ramsey. “Part of what we’re trying to do with this new program is get graduates into well-paying positions, while at the same time preparing them to obtain more industry certifications.”

The degree offers much of the same training as the Computer Networking (CNET) degree program that is already available, and it includes new classes that were designed under the guidance of industry professionals on the advisory committee. Students in the program will take courses such as Introduction to Cybersecurity and Principles of IT Security, as well as Managing Network Security and Ethical Hacking.

The curriculum offers students the skills and theoretical knowledge they need to gain additional certifications in Information Technology, given students are successful in mastering the lessons taught in the coursework.

“We actually prepare students for certifications during the program,” said Blommel. “While some careers require students to transfer and complete a four-year degree, students with an associate’s degree plus certifications can start working right away.”

Blommel said highly motivated students will have the opportunity to gain certifications like the Certified Ethical Hacker, Security+, Cisco certifications and others, with little to no additional training. He said many graduates will have the chance to begin a career in Information Technology while making $60,000 or more per year.

The Associate of Science in Cybersecurity degree places an emphasis on the fundamental skills and knowledge it takes to safeguard an organization’s information and defend systems, while also preparing students to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree.
