Reading

READ 0910 -- Preparing for College Reading,   4 credits Search Current Course Schedule
Common Course Outline
Prerequisites: Appropriate score on placement test

Recommended Skills, Abilities, or Coursework: This is the first of two sequential developmental reading courses designed to improve students' reading strategies so that they can succeed in college level courses.

Required for students who test 28-53 on the Reading Accuplacer Test. Emphasizes strategies for reading a variety of texts, ways to improve reading vocabulary, and resources for increasing comprehension. The objective of this course is to improve the reading skills of the students to the extent that they can effectively approach college-level reading. This goal is accomplished through an individual diagnosis of the student's present reading skills and subsequent individual work in appropriate areas.


READ 0990 -- Reading II,   3 credits Search Current Course Schedule

Prerequisites: READ 0910 with a grade of C or better or appropriate score on placement test

Recommended Skills, Abilities, or Coursework: This is the second of two sequential developmental reading courses designed to improve students' reading strategies so that they can succeed in college level courses

Required for students who test 54-77 on the Reading Accuplacer Test. This course is intended for students who have made progress in READ 0910 or have the appropriate score on the Reading placement test. It offers opportunities for developing college-reading skills.


READ 1106 -- College Textbook Reading,   1 credit Search Current Course Schedule
Common Course Outline
Recommended skills, abilities, or coursework: The course is most effective when the student is taking at least one other college-level course that requires significant textbook reading

Intended for students who have successfully completed READ 0990 or tested at the college-level on the reading placement test. Emphasis is on understanding text structure and developing effective strategies for critically reading college textbooks.


READ 1108 -- College Reading III,   3 credits Search Current Course Schedule

Recommended Skills, Abilities, or Coursework: The course is most effective when the student is taking at least one other college-level course that requires significant textbook reading

Intended for students who have successfully completed READ 990 or tested at the college-level on the reading placement test. Designed for college-level readers who want to continue to develop higher-order skills in comprehension, vocabulary, and rate flexibility. The emphasis will be on the application of skills used in the efficient and effective reading of college texts. This course is designed to improve students' reading and thinking strategies so that they can confidently and independently learn in any college-level course.


READ 1189 -- Topics:,   Search Current Course Schedule
Common Course Outline
This course has been developed as a potential permanent course. The course must follow all the same policies and procedures related to curriculum outlined by the college. It does not duplicate existing course offerings. Refer to course notes for specific course description.


READ 2299 -- Independent Study,   Search Current Course Schedule
Common Course Outline
Independent Study allows a student to earn credit while participating in a supervised learning experience in a community-based or work setting. Students must have successfully completed two courses in the discipline in which they want to undertake independent study. Forms are available in the Educational Services Office. All arrangements must be made prior to registration for the semester in which the project is scheduled and must be approved by the appropriate Dean of Educational Services. In addition, a project outline must be approved by the instructor who will supervise the student's work.
