  3. March Student Recruitment Report

College campus visits are one of the most effective means to recruit potential students. Not only are the college visits informative, college campus visits help student get a "feel" for the college.

The Cambridge Campus also had an increase in attendance in the spring open house. Coon Rapids Campus had just over 100 potential students attend the spring open house.

  1. FACULTY PLEASE READ: Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) Test - April 17th - Coon Rapids H.S.
Once again, all high schools in the state of Minnesota will be giving the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) Test to all 10th and 11th grade students. This year the test will be given on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 from 7:45 am -1:45 pm for Coon Rapids High School students.

As in the past, I am requesting that you allow junior PSEO students in your classes to be absent on that day. Since this is a required test
and the schools must account for the attendance of high school juniors, any junior year PSEO student will be absent from ARCC classes.

Since we do not identify PSEO students that are in your classes, I have asked that these students self-identify and let you know that they will be absent that day for the test. When this occurs, I'll ask you to please make accommodations for these students as necessary. Thanks so much for your help.

  2. Reminder - Faculty: Strategic Planning Roundtables on April 5, 2007
You are invited to a strategic plan roundtable meeting for all Anoka-Ramsey Community College faculty and deans. The meeting is scheduled for Thurs, April 5, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 100 in the ARCC Training & Development Center (TDC). The purpose of the roundtable is to discuss the dynamics of the college’s 2004-09 strategic plan, Designs for Distinction. Al Watts, who led our planning process in 2003-2004, will facilitate the April 5 discussion.

As you may recall, in the fall of 2003, the College embarked on a strategic planning process that resulted in Designs for Distinction. Many strategic activities have been accomplished to date, but we need to assess these results and identify new challenges to ensure our plan remains dynamic, flexible, and inclusive. To that end, a community breakfast was held recently to garner community input. Now we are seeking faculty and staff input. To prepare for the discussion refer to the letter from Pat Johns dated March 15, 2007.

  3. Next Deadline for Awards for Excellence Proposals and Final Reports: May 1, 2007
The next deadline for Awards for Excellence proposals and any completed final reports is May 1, 2007. All proposals and reports should be submitted to the Educational Services office. Since funds must be encumbered before the end of Fiscal Year 2007, this will be the last deadline for proposals unless the funding is reauthorized as part of the budget process. The deadline for all final reports for this fiscal period is December 1, 2007.

  4. Email Questionnaires Concerning Interest in Upper division Offerings
As you know, ARCC is partnering with St. Cloud State University to offer upper-division courses on our campuses. As a part of this partnership, SCSU will be sending email messages to all of our students (both campuses) asking them to complete a brief electronic questionnaire about their interest in upper-division course offering. Please encourage your students to respond to this email generated by SCSU. Two Apple iPod nanos will be given away (random drawing from names of students who submit the completed questionnaire) by SCSU. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Luanne Kane.

  5. FREE student self-service enrollment verifications are now available through the National Student Clearinghouse

    • Check deferment forms and electronic notifications sent to lenders
    • Obtain a list of student loan lenders and link to real-time loan information
    • View enrollment history
    • View enrollment verifications provided to student service providers at the student's request

  1. Congratulations to the ARCC Nominees for the Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Awards!
Congratulations to the Anoka-Ramsey Nominees for the Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Awards:
    • Barbara Brown - Mathematics
    • Mary Januschka - Biology

They are both wonderful representatives of ARCC in this system-wide process.

Beginning with the current academic year, the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System Board of Trustees will give Awards for Excellence in Teaching to three faculty members within the MnSCU System. These awards are intended to recognize superior teaching and the primacy of the teaching mission of the state college and university system institutions.

Their nominations are a result of a call from the ARCC Nominating Committee. Their portfolios and supporting materials were submitted to the Office of the Chancellor by the March 3, 2007 deadline. Now, at the system level, an initial review of all nominations will be done by a designee of the Board of Trustees. This review is to examine each portfolio for compliance with the system-wide criteria for selection and eligibility. Then, a system-level committee will review the nominees and recommend three state-wide award recipients. The committee will recommend three awardees to the Senior Vice Chancellor. The Awards for Excellence in Teaching will be awarded in April of 2007.

All nominees will receive a framed certificate and a pin. The three recipients of the Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching will receive a $5,000.00 honorarium, a certificate, a specially designed medallion to be worn with regalia, and a pin. All nominees will be invited to an event at which the nominees and awardees are honored.

Additional thanks go to the members of the ARCC Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching Nominating Committee members:
co-chairs Patty Wheeler Andrews and Barb Prince, Sasha Verkhovtseva; Deans Luanne Kane, DeeDee Peaslee, and Cynthia Weishapple; and students Miah Clayton and Kristin Burnham.

Congratulations to Barbara Brown - Mathematics
Barbara Brown became an unlimited, full-time mathematics faculty member at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in 1994, after serving the college as a part-time faculty member since 1987. Highlights of her career include:
    • 1989: Created Pre-algebra course.
    • 1992: Received Foundation Grant to assess the effect of study groups in mathematics.
    • 1994: Received Certificate of Commendation from then Governor Arne Carlson and the Minnesota Council for Quality for quality in teaching.
    • 1995: Appointed Classroom Research/Assessment Project Coordinator.
    • 1997: Named Minnesota Mathematics Instructor of the Year Award by the Minnesota Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges.
    • 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005: Identified in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
    • 2000-2002: Co-chaired MinnMATYC committee to define reform developmental mathematics.
    • 2001-2202: Served as Secretary to MinnMATYC.
    • 2004: Published textbook Essentials of Geometry (2004, Addison-Wesley).

Barbara is a member of many professional organizations and has spoken and published widely on teaching methods, classroom research, and assessment of student learning in mathematics. She is the author of the geometry study guide published on campus and sold to students taking Math I and Math II.

Congratulations to Mary Januschka - Biology
Mary Januschka’s teaching philosophy reflects what she practices in the classroom. She states: “One of the main purposes of education is to help prepare students for the challenges of life; to guide both intellectual and psychological development.”

One special way of living this philosophy is that each fall semester, Mary teaches an Honors Biology course; she also takes this group to the Nobel Conference in St. Peter, Minnesota. She bases student projects, discussions, and student presentations on the topic discussed at the conference.

Mary has been involved in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) project on the Cambridge Campus for two years; she received the MnSCU Special Recognition for CTL award. Mary now serves as chairman of the faculty development committee while mentoring the new chair of CTL. Last year (05-06) on her sabbatical, Mary worked with Dr. Dan Halverson at Children’s Hospital on a program to study the effects of exercise on childhood diseases, athletic performance and overall health and well being. She worked at the University of Minnesota with Dr. Mark Pereira on a research project that compared fast food diets with healthy diets and the associated risk for chronic disease. Mary presented the results of her studies to the faculty on the Cambridge campus. Mary then arranged for Dr. Halverson to speak to the community area high school science teachers, and Cambridge Campus staff at “Science Night.”

Mary has received many awards as recognition of her contributions to the college and system initiatives. She has received the Silver Chalk Award at Coon Rapids and has been named to the Faculty Honor Roll (2001-02 and 2003-04) and given the Teacher of Excellence Award (2002-03) at the Cambridge campus.

  5. Assessment Status
Through assessment, we in academe have a way to document what we do in practice. Through that documentation we are able to answer questions such as: “What do we do well?” or “Where should we think about making changes in our practice?” Assessment is, in one sense, a way of codifying the common sense we often use in our daily work with our programs and our students. However, in another sense, it is the cutting edge of evidence-based practice!

With increasing calls for accountability [“Are your students learning what they are expected to learn? What is the evidence to support your claims?”], we really have two choices: allow outside requirements to dictate post-secondary student learning outcomes and assessment measures to us, or use our professional expertise to determine appropriate learning outcomes and ways to demonstrate how we know what our students know and can do.

The Higher Learning Commission has for many years encouraged institutions to develop their own, appropriate student learning outcomes and assessment measures. They have asked us to collect appropriate data and make sense of that data as a way to affirm or alter our current practices. I understand how it can feel as though institutions would only do this as a compliance piece for accreditation but in fact, the HLC is looking to preserve our autonomy and the autonomy of regional accreditation (as opposed to more direct government regulation.)

Higher Learning Commission Site Visit Results on Assessment
The HLC site team reported that our assessment plan was fine, but a) we needed all programs to be involved in the process, and b) we needed to move conclusively towards “closing the loop” i.e., demonstrating that we are using data to make decisions about our programs.

The HLC site team said the following in its final site visit report:
Criterion Three requires evidence that the assessment results inform improvements in the teaching and learning process, that last step in closing the loop. While ARCC has made significant and admirable progress since 2003 in its assessment process, there has not yet been sufficient time to demonstrate improved teaching and learning across all disciplines and programs, as not all assessment efforts are at the same point in the implementation process. Although assessment is conducted regularly, there is no systematic cycle of assessment, analysis, and reporting back of the assessment data to faculty in each discipline or program. Additionally, there is no clear understanding of how assessment outcomes and resulting needs fits into the College-wide planning and budgeting process.

A review of the ARCC assessment plan and program assessment documentation reveals that the application of assessment data to program/ curriculum improvement has not yet shown any results and, in some cases, is in the early stages. A review of documentation on assessment of general education reveals some progress in response to MnSCU directives [the review of the MnTC] but there are no significant results or analyses of data-drive decision-making or budgeting.

    Recommendation of the Team:
Pursuant to the Commission’s expectation that assessment results should inform improvements in curriculum, pedagogy, and instructional resources, the team recommends that a progress report be submitted to the HLC by March 1, 2009. This progress report should demonstrate evidence that assessment data from general education, developmental education, and career programs are being used to:
    • Modify/improve courses
    • Modify/improve curricula
    • Modify/improve academic programs

Further, the progress report must document that these data are being used to inform the budget-planning and strategic planning processes at ARCC.

    Current Status at This Point:
    • all programs have established goals
    • competencies need to be identified in some program areas
    • ways of measuring student learning are needed in several program areas
    • closing the loop needs to happen in most program areas

    Last Fall Semester:
    • some data was collected. If your program area has data to be input, please do this by turning it in to Caroline by the end of January
    • the assessment work group members were involved with some of the divisions
    • the HLC site team evaluated our status with regard to a workable assessment program

By the end of this academic year, we plan that:
    • each Program will be in contact with the working group of assessment coordinators to evaluate where they are, and create a plan for their own work
    • the working group of assessment coordinators will work the research office to prepare us to use new features that have been added to eLumen

    Conclusion
On one hand, HLC is the “stick” rather than the carrot: if we do not make good progress by March of 2009, ARCC will likely have a focused visit by an HLC team and be required to report back on our progress until our next visit in 2016. One the other hand, HLC is the carrot, helping us to set up our own systems of understanding the levels of student attainment of our own student learning outcomes to enhance our practice. In either case, this is something that we must continue to work on, and should continue to work on for the sake of our programs and - ultimately - our students. 1. Academic Alert Program - you make the difference!
All faculty are encouraged to participate in the Academic Alert Program, an early intervention support system designed to enhance student success and retention. The program facilitates communication with students who are performing less than "C" level work and/or who have excessive absences. An alert letter (please see the Faculty Handbook for content of letter) is sent out notifying them that they are at risk of failing and strongly encourages them to seek support from faculty, tutoring, counseling, and other support services.

Academic Alert letters are sent out twice per semester, at the end of the fourth week and at the end of the ninth week. Please choose the time frame that works best for your classes. Choose on
