Two College Faculty members head to Chicago to brainstorm ways of engaging students in poetry

May 25, 2017

Two Anoka-Ramsey Community College Faculty members, Samantha Ten Eyck and Jasmin Ziegler, recently were selected to attend the Poetry Foundation's Summer Poetry Teachers' Institute, July 10-12, 2017, in Chicago, Ill.

For five days, Eyck and Ziegler will study and discuss poetry with renowned poetry practitioners and expert teachers to develop lesson plans to bring back to their classrooms at Anoka-Ramsey.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to brainstorm and discuss innovative, engaging and accessible ways of exposing my Anoka-Ramsey students to poetry,” said Eyck.

The Poetry Teachers’ Institute encourages conversations among teachers about past successes, challenges and insights in bringing poetry to students, and it offers participants energizing approaches to reading poems, invaluable materials for teaching, and new ways to invigorate their instructional habits and practices.

Participants are selected from applications submitted by teachers across K-12 grade levels and community college instructors. The Institute seeks a range of participants and selects from new and experienced teachers, those who enjoy teaching poetry, and those who shy away from it. Tuition is paid for those who are selected.
