Issues and opportunities that affect the two-year
college mission are the focus of a newly created
U.S. Department of Education work group. The
group’s primary purpose is to engage in
an exchange of information between two-year
college leaders and Department of Education
leadership. Presidents Patrick Johns of Anoka-Ramsey
Community College, Joan Barret-Volkmuth of St.
Cloud Technical College and Cheryl Frank of
Inver Hills Community College have been invited
by the Department to convene on May 5 in Washington,
D.C.

“I hope to work with my
colleagues to bring a broad representation of
the views of Minnesota’s higher education
leaders to policymakers in Washington,”
says Johns. “The efforts of this work
group will help community colleges better serve
the students to whom we are so diligently committed.”
Specifically, the work group will:
- Identify key issues and trends facing two-year
colleges at the local and state level, particularly
in light of the reauthorization of the laws
affecting vocational, adult, and postsecondary
programs.
- Identify promising policies and practices
that help two-year colleges fulfill their
missions more effectively.
- Direct an interactive discussion on the
impact of existing or proposed federal policies
and programs.
- Serve as a conduit for informal discussions
among two-year college leaders, researchers,
and policymakers.
Participating members of the U.S. Department
of Education and other organizations include:
- Carol D’Amico, Assistant Secretary
for Vocational and Adult Education, U.S. Department
of Education
