College finds niche in biomedical arena

Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC), Coon Rapids, Minn., is partnering with Transoma Medical, Arden Hills Minn., to develop a training curriculum that will prepare the company’s employees for the heavily regulated medical device industry. The training is funded by a $375,000 grant awarded by the State of Minnesota’s Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Board (MJSP).

“These partnerships are an all-round win,” says Matt Kramer, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. “They are a win for the employees, a win for the company, a win for the college and a win for the state.”

A formal grant signing on March 30 at Transoma Medical made the partnership official. The Transoma Grant is the 18th MJSP grant awarded to Anoka-Ramsey Community College and the 10th in the area of biomedical training.

“We’ve become a center for biomedical training by customizing programs tailored to the needs of the companies we partner with,” says Dr. Patrick M. Johns, President of Anoka-Ramsey Community College. “Our experience in the biomedical field has received excellent reviews and we will continue to deliver excellent training in that area.”

Anoka-Ramsey Community College will implement a broad curriculum for the more than 275 employees scheduled for training. Fourteen courses will be designed specifically for Transoma Medical and an additional 10 courses will come from the college’s Biomedical Technology, Biology and Nursing Programs.

The training will focus on:

  • New products and improving existing products;
  • Distribution of medical devices for research purposes; and
  • Medical and business training.

“We are enthusiastic about working with Transoma,” explains Denise Gamble, ARCC Program Director. “It is such a pleasure to work with companies that make training a priority for their employees. And this partnership will result in long-term institutional and educational benefits for both parties. ARCC now offers degree and certificate programs for Biomedical Technologists, Biomedical Technicians, and Clinical Research Specialists as a direct result of our collaborations with biomedical device companies and MJSP.”
