| Children are sure to enjoy the inflatables, such as the Pirate Ship (shown), that are part of Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s free veterans picnic. Veterans and those active in the military along with their families are welcome to join the fun May 8, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Coon Rapids Campus River Plaza. |
Along with events such as the picnic and express registration sessions, both the Cambridge Campus and Coon Rapids Campus have veterans’ resource centers to facilitate veterans’ re-entry into civilian life and welcome them to higher education with services and resources. The veterans’ area, staffed part-time by a veteran-student, serves as an information resource center with a computer and phone as well as a place for veterans to socialize.
More recently, the college’s TRIO Veterans Upward Bound program welcomed Phil O’Donnell as the new Director of Veterans Upward Bound to oversee the program to serve veteran-students at both the Cambridge Campus and Coon Rapids Campus. The Veterans Upward Bound program serves 120 veterans annually at Anoka-Ramsey, offering instruction, tutoring, academic advising, career counseling, and assistance with college applications, the financial aid application process and community resources.
The college is hosting two Veterans Upward Bound Information Nights, Tuesday, May 13 at the Coon Rapids Campus Cafeteria and Thursday, May 15 at the Cambridge Campus Rm. E124. Veterans who have served at least 180 days of active duty other than training and have any discharge other than dishonorable may qualify for the Upward Bound program, which provides a variety of free services including classes and tutoring, help with the college application process, career guidance, one-on-one advising, a monthly stipend and more.
For more information about the numerous veteran services at Anoka-Ramsey Community College or to RSVP for the picnic, visit the Military Education Resource Center located in Rm. E239 at the Cambridge Campus and Rm. T106 at the Coon Rapids Campus, call 763.433.1390 or visit http://www.AnokaRamsey.edu/alumni/events.cfm.
