Anoka-Ramsey Community College Students and Staff Spread Season’s Spirit

Anoka-Ramsey Community College students and employees collected food and household staple donations for Anoka County food shelves over the past few weeks. The goal of their season-inspired efforts is to make the holiday season a little brighter for families and children in need.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College students (from left) Bora Kuyomba, Crystal Holzer, Sarah Swenson, and Caitlynn Cooper prepare to deliver the food collected at the college’s Coon Rapids Campus. The food drive was coordinated for area food shelves by Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society of two-year colleges, at the college.

Volunteers from the Anoka-Ramsey student honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, stepped forward to deliver the goods to the Anoka Armory. Anoka County Christmas Committee volunteers receive the donation and distribute it to individuals and families in need.

“The food drive was part of an effort to help the Christmas Committee of Anoka County, but most importantly, to instill-among Phi Theta Kappa members and other students-the importance of giving back to the community,” says college faculty member and Phi Theta Kappa’s faculty advisor, Gordy Wax.

Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society of two-year Colleges, is grounded in four hallmarks-Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. The Anoka-Ramsey chapter develops activities and programs that foster these hallmarks among members.

The Anoka County Christmas Committee was selected for the food donation because it specifically serves low-income Anoka residents. The Christmas Committee is comprised of an all volunteer community supported groups, such as Anoka Women of Today, Lions and Kiwanis clubs, with the sole purpose of providing food and toys to those in need during the holiday season.
