Anoka-Ramsey Community College Student Places First at Statewide GIS Conference

Colin Lee, an Anoka-Ramsey Community College student, was noticed at the 17th annual Minnesota Geographic Information Systems/ Land Information Systems (GIS/LIS) Consortium and Workshops in Rochester, Minn. this October. Lee was awarded first place in the scholarship poster competition for a poster titled, “Disk Golfing in Inver Grove Heights.” Lee’s award secures Anoka-Ramsey as the first-place winner for three consecutive years. As part of the award, Lee received a $500 scholarship and a certificate.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College instructor, Banette Kritzky congratulates Anoka-Ramsey student, Colin Lee for the first place scholarship award he received for his poster submission at the 17th annual Minnesota Geographic Information Systems/Land Information Systems (GIS/LIS) Consortium in Rochester, Minn. in October. Though he has not graduated yet, Lee has already secured a full-time position in the GIS field at the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Lee plans to graduate from Anoka-Ramsey with an associate in science degree next summer and transfer to the University of Minnesota in fall 2008. Last year, He secured an internship at the Minnesota Department of Transportation photogrammetric unit (aerial mapping). Recently, he was hired as a full-time employee with the same department.

“I've always had an interest in geography and love for the art and science of cartography,” says Lee. “It's been a perfect fit for me, I truly enjoy it.”

Along with awards for graduate, undergraduate and community college student scholarships, the annual statewide conference featured workshops, technical sessions, panel discussions, technology demonstrations, project updates and local and national speakers. All activities are geared toward increasing geographic information systems and land information systems technology in Minnesota and beyond.

“All of the students did an outstanding job in the various competitions,” says Anoka-Ramsey GIS instructor, Banette Kritzky. “I thoroughly enjoyed every presentation and was delighted by the professionalism and poise exhibited by each student.”

Joining Lee in earning awards at the event were students from the Mankato State University, St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota.
