Controlled Burn Invigorates Growth of Native Prairie on Campus at Anoka-Ramsey Community College

The first step to restore native plants to 12 acres of college campus property took place Aug. 8 when Anoka-Ramsey Community College conducted a controlled burn on its Cambridge Campus. Controlled burning is used in prairie restoration to minimize woody vegetation, stimulate seed production and recycle nutrients. Additional steps will continue this fall and new plant growth should be evident next spring.

Prairie Burn

An employee from Minnesota Native Landscapes, closely manages the fire that burned off 12 acres of the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Cambridge Campus, Aug. 8. This controlled burn will reinvigorate the native plants to restore the natural prairie.

The 12-acres of prairie will be used as an outdoor classroom for science courses, including those leading to an associate’s degree in environmental science. The college also welcomes area residents to enjoy the peaceful, natural areas, complete with walking paths, on campus in Cambridge. For more information visit http://webs.anokaramsey.edu/prairie/.

The prairie restoration and additional landscaping projects - managed by Minnesota Native Landscapes, Inc., Foley, Minn. - are part of the college’s preparation for opening the new 34,000 square foot addition to the Cambridge Campus. The community is invited to attend the Building Dedication Celebration, Aug. 23 at noon.

The college’s Coon Rapids Campus also has a natural prairie area that underwent a controlled burn in April. For more information about the Coon Rapids Campus or the Building Dedication Ceremony, visit www.AnokaRamsey.edu.
