College Receives More Funds to Prepare High School Students for Higher Education

For the 2007-2008 academic year, Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) has received an unprecedented number of federally-funded TRIO grants. The grants will fund three Upward Bound programs which are designed to remove barriers that may keep high school students from attending college and becoming college graduates. Each of the three Upward Bound programs at ARCC will receive $250,000 annually for the next four years.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) staff (shown left to right: Sally Schwartz, admissions representative; Amanda Klawiter, Bookstore Intermittent; Ann Kinkel, TRIO secretary and Meng Yang, Upward Bound advisor) celebrated the funding of the three Upward Bound programs which will enable ARCC to promote higher education to underserved high school students.

Two of the grants launch the ARCC Coon Rapids Campus’ 9th year of funding and participation in Upward Bound. The third grant marks the first time Upward Bound services will be offered at the ARCC Cambridge Campus.

“Upward Bound allows us to provide intensive advising and tutoring to high school students who might not realize college is an option for them,” says Cindy Nutter, ARCC Director of TRIO Services. “We are thrilled to see Upward Bound programming extend to our Cambridge Campus this year.”

As part of the Upward Bound services, ARCC advisors visit enrolled high schools to offer individual tutoring and advising. Enrolled students then visit ARCC for Saturday workshops and for a six-week summer program that offers an innovative learning experience, more college and career counseling and access to cultural and social activities.

Each grant serves 50 students. The high schools targeted to receive Upward Bound services include: Anoka, Blaine, Champlin Park, Coon Rapids, North Branch, Park Center, Osseo, Spring Lake Park, Cambridge-Isanti and Princeton.

“The best thing about Upward Bound is watching students grow in knowledge, self-confidence and preparedness for college,” says Nutter.

An unidentified student who recently completed the six-week Upward Bound program this summer, wrote in the follow-up survey:

"Upward Bound gave me a chance to experience many new things. I did things I never thought I could do."
