Approximately 100 people attended the annual event and many vied for the Ugly Bag, a not-so-attractive bag that people dumped money into during the hors d'oeuvre-hour and that individually raised the most funds. While no one knew how much money was inside the bag except the person in charge of the bag and the auctioneer, the bidding was intense and amusing, resulting in much laughter and a final bid of $450. The winner was reimbursed with $168 that had been collected in the bag.
Another high fundraiser was the Sexy Man Bag filled with items such as men's cologne, a John Deere muscle shirt and romantic CDs. The bidding resulted in an affable battle between two women, and the bag finally went to event’s host, Cheryl Karpen for $280.
"This event familiarized people with the financial needs of community college students,” comments Evelyn Gedde, ARCC Director of Institutional Advancement. “Guests had the opportunity to listen to some heartwarming stories about students, the difference scholarships make in students’ lives and the advantages of a community college education."
