Earth Day Comes Early, Often to College Campus

Approximately 30 Anoka-Ramsey Community College students from a fitness walking class committed a single class hour April 19 to the betterment of the environment at the Coon Rapids Campus. Their efforts amassed 21 bags of trash and recyclables in less than an hour from along the Mississippi River, the parking lots toward Mississippi Blvd., the natural area up to Coon Rapids Blvd. and the recreational fields.
Anoka-Ramsey Community College fitness walking class students in coordination with Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society of two-year colleges, proudly display the fruit of their Coon Rapids Campus clean-up efforts: 21 bags of trash and recyclables.

“We originally planned to do the clean-up twice a year,” says Phi Theta Kappa president, Amanda Even. “But this year, we've managed to do it four times thanks to the efforts of the walking classes. They deserve all the recognition.”

The College’s honor society, Phi Theta Kappa deserves credit for planning an entire week of activities for Earth Week. The clean-up was a part of "Clean Communities Day." Phi Theta Kappa also recruited the walking class, planned the areas to be cleaned and provided the supplies, such as bags, orange vests and gloves.

“Activities such as this not only raise awareness about our environment, but they also create a sense of the shared responsibility we have as students of this college and inhabitants of this planet,” Even adds.

This spring effort surpassed last fall’s effort by three bags. Most of the trash was recyclable, Even says.

ARCC offers a variety of classes that focus on the knowledge and skills necessary for the development and enhancement of a healthy lifestyle throughout the life span. For information on all courses offered, call 763.433.1100 or visit www.AnokaRamsey.edu.
