Representative Jim Ramstad to be Recognized at National Trio Day Celebration

Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) and North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) will celebrate National TRIO Day Monday, April 2, 2007 with student speakers and recognition of United States Congressional Representative, Honorable Jim Ramstad for his long-standing commitment and support of the TRIO programs.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) participates in two TRIO programs: Student Support Services and Upward Bound.
At this time, Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) participates in two TRIO programs: Student Support Services and Upward Bound. Recently, ARCC applied for a third program-Veterans’ Upward Bound--to offer greater services to returning veterans. Funds for these federal programs are scarce, making community support vital.

The initial three, federally-funded TRIO programs began in 1964 in an effort to create equal access to higher education for all Americans. At that time, the U.S. Congress established the series of programs to help Americans who were low-income, first-generation college (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree) or disabled enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America's economic and social life.

Today there are seven TRIO programs. All are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and designed to help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.

TRIO programs help by providing such activities as college preparation, academic advising and counseling, career exploration, tutoring, financial aid and scholarship counseling. ARCC and NHCC have each been hosts for the Student Support Services/TRIO since 1991 and ARCC secured an Upward Bound/TRIO grant in 1998.
