Cambridge Campus 20th Annual Science Night Ignites Interest in Physical Fitness

More than 100 community members and local science teachers attended Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) Cambridge Campus 20th annual Science Night Feb. 5. The event featured Dr. Dan Halvorsen, an exercise physiologist and University of Minnesota Medical School professor, who talked about "Health, Fitness and Energy: The Exercise Medicine Story.” Halverson has served as a sports physiologist for amateur and professional athletes in United States, local professional teams and tennis stars Pete Sampras and Monica Seles.

Dr. Dan Halvorsen, the guest speaker at Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s 20th annual Science Night, was greeted by more than 100 community members and science teachers, many of whom stayed after the presentation to ask specific questions.

Increasing the interest of students and the general public in the fascinating subject of science has been the goal of the Science Night event since it began. The topics Dr. Halvorsen presented-fitness, nutrition and obesity-however, resonated with many attendees, including ARCC biology students.

“I agree with Dr. Halvorsen,” says ARCC anatomy and physiology student, Sarah Sullivan. ”If we taught children about the importance of exercise and eating healthy the same way we teach the importance of not smoking and wearing seatbelts there would be less obese children. This could help turn around the problems with obesity and negative health.”
