Exercise Physiology Focus at Anoka-Ramsey Community College 20th Annual Science Night

Ready, set, get a science workout at Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) Cambridge Campus 20th annual Science Night, Monday, Feb. 5, 7 - 8 p.m., when speaker Dr. Dan Halvorsen talks about "Health, Fitness and Energy: The Exercise Medicine Story.”

Halvorsen knows how to maximize the health of the human body. He has served as a sports physiologist for amateur and professional athletes in United States, local professional teams and tennis stars Pete Sampras and Monica Seles.

Currently, a physiologist, University of Minnesota Medical School professor, ExMed Clinic, Exercise Physiologist and Director of the Kohl's Power Cubed Exercise Medicine Center at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, Halverson has been working with athletes for nearly 30 years. His talk at Science Night will be of special interest to anyone interested in exercise.

Dr. Dan Halverson Dr. Dan Halverson, the speaker at Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s 20th annual Science Night, teaches courses such as human power, sports performance and disease treatment at the University of Minnesota.

"As a physiologist, I am increasingly surprised and saddened by the decrease of physically fit people in Minnesota, and the rampant health problems of obesity, diabetes, chronic fatigue, asthma and depression,” says Dr. Halvorsen. “At our ExMed Clinic, we use daily exercise to treat these diseases. Exercise is a medicine, a powerful medicine."

An in-demand speaker and a frequent guest on a weekly cable television program hosted by Boynton's Health Services, Halvorsen recently shared his research at the University of Minnesota’s Center of Transportation in a presentation entitled, "Exercise Medicine Study for 'Destination Exercise.”

In the presentation, Halvorsen asserted that walking and biking may be able to solve obesity trends while affecting fossil fuel costs, supply, and efficiency. His research on the subject found a 67.2% adherence rate when a daily walk or bike ride complements daily destinations and an 81.4% adherence rate when routes are efficient, safe, fun, and easily accessible.

The public is invited to join Anoka-Ramsey Community College faculty, staff and students in a leap toward the science of exercise at Science Night.
