Start the New Year with a Roadmap to College Degrees and Career Success

Anoka-Ramsey Community College Adult Return-To-School Workshop Illuminates Multiple Routes

If college seems like something that you experienced once upon a time, or if you haven’t been to college, and a degree would help you advance professionally, Anoka-Ramsey Community college (ARCC) can help. ARCC’s biannual Adult Return-to-School workshop is set for Thursday, Jan. 4, 5 - 7 p.m. in the Coon Rapids Campus College Services Building. The workshop will kick start your return-to-college planning with information on financial aid, courses, programs, degree options, strategies to integrate a college education into your busy life and more.

Adult Learners According to Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, a full 36 percent of students in the state system in 2005 were adults 25 years old or older.

You may be closer to a degree than you know. The workshop will help you explore Competency-Based Education (CBE) which takes what you’ve learned through work and life and turn it into college credit.

“I was not able to go any further in my career,” says Rachel Chudek, a CBE class graduate and part-time ARCC student. Chudek returned to college in September 2005 when, after 15 years with the same company, she found her career stalled. “They told me I have wonderful experience, but I couldn’t get the job I wanted in the human resources department without a degree.”

Chudek was able to turn some of that experience into college credit by taking the CBE class every Monday during a semester. The class is specifically designed to help working adults receive college credit for work and life experiences and moves them closer to a two-year degree, or transfer to a four-year college. Once she earns her associates degree at ARCC, Chudek plans to transfer to a four-year institution for a bachelor’s degree in human resources management.

“What I’ve found is that people need to have more confidence in the experience that they’ve accumulated at work and in their lives since leaving high school,” says Shirley Andreason, ARCC Competency-Based Education Faculty Coordinator. “What they learn in this workshop and in the CBE class is that there are multiple ways to earn a degree.”

CBE can assure returning students of their current and future success, and financial trepidation may be alleviated by an ALLISS grant, which covers the cost of one five-credit class, associated books and materials for adults who haven’t been in school for at least seven years.

As well as the opportunity to present experiential learning as competencies to be assessed for credit towards a degree, according to Andreason, adult learners find several aspects of the CBE program very helpful including online classes, in-service job training, supervised study, classroom instruction, internships and other non-traditional learning experiences.

“The CBE class took the fear out of going back to school,” says Chudek. “I found I could handle it, even with a full-time job and two children.”
