“Anoka-Ramsey Community College
continues to expand its programming
to meet the needs of our communities,” says
ARCC President Patrick M. Johns. “The
new Environmental Science degree offers
students education in an important
field.”
A two-year degree from ARCC easily
transfers to a four-year program. With
a four-year degree in environmental
sciences, students can embark on myriad
career paths such as field technician,
forestry, wildlife management, education
and more.
To assist students preparing for a
four-year degree in environmental science,
ARCC has established agreements with
Minnesota State University-Mankato
and St. Cloud State University. These
agreements help ensure that students’ completed
coursework will be accepted by a university’s
environmental science program for a
seamless transfer. In addition, students
may also be able to transfer part or
all of their environmental science
coursework to the University of Minnesota,
Minnesota State University-Moorhead
and other postsecondary institutions.
This unique degree was a natural outgrowth
of ARCC’s natural surroundings.
In addition to the college’s
experienced faculty and up-to-date
facilities, both campuses feature rich
environmental ecosystems that serve
as natural laboratories for students.
The Cambridge Campus, located on the
Rum River, features several acres of
land that form part of the Spirit River
Nature Area, a system of more than
two miles of paved and unpaved trails
with information kiosks and interpretive
signs that highlight the area’s
ecosystems. The Coon Rapids Campus,
located on the Mississippi River, features
a 20-acre natural area that comprises
two ecosystems. The campus also maintains
a greenhouse and a prairie garden.
Both campuses offer all requirements
for the degree program.
The new Environmental Science degree
grew out of the college’s long-established,
well-respected science programming
and the efforts of biology faculty
members Dr. Joan McKearnan, Dr. Debby
Filler, and Brad Wold.
