Walter Mondale returns to Anoka-Ramsey Community College for commencement address after keynoting first ceremony in 1967

It was June 9, 1967 when then United States Senator Walter F. Mondale addressed the first graduating class of Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC). There were 80 graduates that day. Mondale will return to the commencement podium at the College’s Coon Rapids Campus for the May 12, 2006 graduation ceremony. This time, he has an illustrious career to share with the more than 670 graduates.

Walter F. Mondale will keynote the commencement ceremony at Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s Coon Rapids Campus on May 12, 7 p.m.

“It is truly a great honor to welcome Walter Mondale back to our campus,” says Dr. Patrick M. Johns, President of ARCC. “This year, Anoka-Ramsey Community College is celebrating 40 years of serving students who work to make Minnesota a better place. Mondale is the perfect speaker to highlight our 40th-year because he is a great Minnesotan and a role model for our graduates who want to make a positive difference in the world.”

When Mondale first spoke at ARCC, he had already served in the Army, earned a bachelor’s and law degree from the University of Minnesota, practiced law, served as Minnesota Attorney General, and served three of his twelve years in the United States Senate. This turned out to be only the beginning of a historic career that includes serving as the Vice President of the United States from 1976-1980, Democratic nominee for President of the United States, United States Ambassador to Japan, and Special Envoy to Indonesia on economic reform.

Today Mondale is a Partner with the Dorsey and Whitney law firm where he serves as Senior Counsel in the International/Corporate Practice Group. He has been named Distinguished University Fellow in Law and Public Affairs at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. He is also a published author of numerous articles as well as the book “The Accountability of Power: Toward a Responsible Presidency,” and continues to serve on the executive committee for the Peace Prize Forum.

Just as Mondale has become a prominent figure in Minnesota, Anoka-Ramsey Community College has become a prominent provider of higher education in the Northeast suburbs of the Twin Cities and in East Central Minnesota. To date, Anoka-Ramsey Community College has served more than 145,000 people through its credit and non-credit course offerings.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College also has a campus in Cambridge, Minn. Minnesota Congressman Jim Oberstar will provide the keynote address for the Spring 2006 graduates of the Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s Cambridge Campus.
