Jean, played by ARCC student Mark Palmer (left), and Berenger, played by ARCC student Jeremy Borntrager (right), evaluate their symptoms in a scene from “Rhinoceros,” the Spring production at Anoka-Ramsey Community College Coon Rapids Campus, playing April 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22.

Got a sore throat? Raspy voice? Dry skin itch? Maybe you’re coming down with rhinoceritus. The condition has been spreading on the Coon Rapids Campus of Anoka-Ramsey Community College as the Theatre Department prepares for its spring play, Eugene Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros,” scheduled for April 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22.

In the 1959 theatre-of-the-absurd play, a quiet French town puzzles over the appearance of wild rhinoceroses roaming the streets. When it turns out the beasts are actually people suffering from rhinoceritus, most of the town seems to accept the predicament as simply another social movement. Only one man suggests the situation is insane. The absurd premise becomes a vehicle to explore the concepts of culture, conformity, and morality.

The production is directed by ARCC theatre faculty member Jack Bibee, with set and lighting design by ARCC theatre technician Tom Valach.

All performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the Coon Rapids Campus. An interpreted performance for the hearing impaired will be offered at the show Thursday, April 20.

Tickets are $8, available at the door and in advance at the College Bookstore, or by calling 763-433-1250.
