Joy Borgesan as Androcles, left, confronts Josh Haggenmiller as Pantalone, right, in a rehearsal of "Androcles and the Lion," the Spring production of the Theatre Department at the Cambridge Campus of Anoka-Ramsey Community College. Performances will run March 31 through April 2 on the Cambridge Campus.

This cheerful musical recounts the story of a boy who pulls a thorn out of a lion’s paw and later has his life spared by the same lion. Adapted by children’s playwright Aurand Harris, the 60-minute performance will include songs and slapstick comedy done in the Italian style Commedia dell’arte. Brimming with themes of friendship and gratitude, “Androcles and the Lion” is a production that can be enjoyed by children ages 4 on up, and all others who are “young at heart.”

The cast includes ARCC students Ben Wuerflein (of Isanti, Minn.) as the Lion; Joy Borgesan (of Cambridge, Minn.) as Androcles; Josh Haggenmiller (of Mora, Minn.) as the miser Pantalone; Luc Swanson (of Princeton, Minn.) as Lelio; Tara Irwin (of Isanti, Minn.) as Isabella; and Tom Fredrickson (of Mora, Minn.) as the Captain. The production is directed by ARCC Theatre Department faculty member Gail Kasl, and stage managed by ARCC student Liesel Schmidt.

Performances for the public will be in IS-105 on the west side of the Cambridge Campus at the following times:

  • March 31, 7 p.m.
  • April 1, 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • April 2, 2 p.m.

The play will also be performed for Braham Elementary School and Mora Elementary School children on March 30.
