New bioscience initiative made possible with over $950,000 from Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Grant and Boston Scientific dollar match.
Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX) and Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) received a $399,982 Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Grant (MJSP) from the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) to establish a training curriculum that will result in career advancement opportunities and lay the foundation for new, more automated manufacturing possesses. A grant signing celebration marking the beginning of this initiative will take place at 2PM, Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at Boston Scientific Cardiovascular Group’s headquarters in Maple Grove, Minnesota.
"The training this grant supports will ensure that the Boston Scientific workforce at all levels will be effectively prepared for the company's transition to automated manufacturing processes, and benefit from greater earning potential and promotional opportunities,” says Matt Kramer, Commissioner of the Department of Employment and Economic Development. “Anoka-Ramsey Community College will receive a boost as well. New curriculum developed for the project will be incorporated into their planned engineering technology for medical device manufacturing degrees."

Anoka-Ramsey Community College will provide the training on-site at Boston Scientific’s Maple Grove facility. The curriculum will provide employees with a better understanding of the cultural change associated with a transition to automation, how it impacts design and production, how to use the equipment, etc. The MJSP grant along with $544,037 matched dollars from Boston Scientific will provide funds for the College to design the curriculum and provide training for the 406 Boston Scientific employees whose jobs may be affected by the increased automation.

For Anoka-Ramsey, it represents an opportunity to provide the skills Minnesota people need to successfully compete professionally, and flourish personally.”

This is the second MJSP grant awarded to ARCC and Boston Scientific. The first grant was awarded in 2001 and included $400,000 for computer-based training for scientists, engineers and other professionals on staff.
Much has been written in the last few years about the importance of medical device industry in Minnesota’s economy. Rooted in the post World War II era, this industry has grown to employ more than 19,000 Minnesotans with a total annual wage of more than $1 billion. An important priority for this industry is finding and maintaining a skilled labor force as the industry shifts in operations, technology and capacity.
Anoka-Ramsey Community College with campuses in Coon Rapids and Cambridge, has been a leading provider of higher education and training in the north suburban area of Minneapolis/St. Paul and East Central Minnesota since 1965. Annually, the college serves more than 9,000 learners of all ages as they pursue associate degrees that transfer as the first two years of a bachelor's degree, or certificate programs that lead immediately to rewarding careers.
