Bike
tour kicks-off at Anoka-Ramsey Community
College Coon Rapids and Cambridge Campuses
Anoka-Ramsey Community College officially
kicked-off the second annual "Scholarship
Challenge" bike tour to raise funds
for part-time students, Aug. 25. The event
is organized and conducted by Former Trustee
for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities
System Bob Erickson who bikes 2,300 miles,
visiting 53 colleges in an attempt to
bring awareness to the financial needs
of part-time students.
Erickson's tour began at the Coon Rapids
Campus of Anoka-Ramsey Community College
after comments from College President,
Patrick Johns; honor student and scholarship
recipient, Erin Monetti; and Minnesota
State Colleges and Universities Chancellor,
James McCormick.
Erickson was joined on the first leg
of the tour - a trip to the Cambridge
Campus of Anoka-Ramsey Community College
- by Vice Chancellor of Human Resources
Bill Tschida. Students, faculty and staff
from the Cambridge Campus greeted the
biking team with words of praise for their
extensive effort. Dean of Educational
Services, Diedra Peaslee and honor student,
Paula Jackson thanked Erickson and spoke
about the difference that scholarships
make in the lives of students.
Erickson bikes in hopes that Minnesota's
outdated financial aid program will be
revamped. He feels that the program does
not address the needs of part-time students
who generally do not qualify for financial
aid. During the completion of last year's
tour, Erickson raised a total of $79,000
in scholarships for these students at
Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
