Teens Can Build Cool Stuff and Learn about Great Careers With Summer Engineering Class

Career exploration program is newest addition to Anoka-Ramsey Community College's Kid U/College for Kids and Teens.

Young adults who like building things have an exciting opportunity this summer. Adventures in Engineering, a fun-filled career exploration class, will be offered July 18-21 by the Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC) Kid U/College for Kids and Teens.

The four-day hands-on class is designed to allow boys and girls entering grades 7-12 to step into the world of engineers.

"We put this program together because there are few, if any, courses at the middle school or high school level that are specifically about engineering," says Bill Saari, ARCC Engineering Faculty member and Adventures in Engineering instructor. "Students who have an ideal background for a career in engineering may not know much about this career option."

To learn what engineers do, participants will get to create robots using LEGO® Mindstorms (TM), perform experiments on different engineering materials, and even design their own bridges using a computer program called West Point Bridge Designer. They'll also learn about the engineering profession and the variety of engineering fields available.

Three separate sections of Adventures in Engineering will be offered. One for students entering grades 7-9, one for students entering grades 10-12, and one for females students entering grades 7-12. The girls-only section is designed specifically to help promote engineering to girls, since women are underrepresented in the engineering profession. However, the other two sections are open to both boys and girls.

The cost for the class is $50. Star Power scholarships for boys and girls and Become a Star scholarships for girls can be applied to this course. To be eligible for the Star Power scholarships, students must qualify for free or reduced lunch programs during the regular school year. Become a Star scholarships require a short student essay explaining their interest in taking a science course at Kid U.
