Anoka-Ramsey Community College Mounts Saucy Spoof of 1930s-Style Musicals

It’s the Great Depression, bulldozers are tearing the theater down, and the prima donna is raising waves -- but the show must go on! That’s the set-up for Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s winter musical production, “Dames at Sea,” running Feb. 4-5, and Feb. 10-12 in the Coon Rapids Campus Performing Arts Center.

Full of comedy, tap dancing and love songs, this spoof of 1930s and '40s movie musicals tells the story of naïve, fresh-faced Ruby, who arrives in New York with nothing but her tap shoes and a suitcase. She becomes the last-minute star of a new show, but only after a sailor persuades the theater-less cast to perform on the deck of a battleship. A popular play ever since its Broadway premiere in 1968, it features book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller with music by Jim Wise. The original Broadway run helped launch the career of stage and movie actress Bernadette Peters in the role of Ruby.

The upcoming show is a joint production of the Theater and Music Departments of Anoka-Ramsey Community College, The play is directed by ARCC theater faculty member Scott Ford; ARCC music faculty member Rich Manik serves as Musical Director; ARCC music faculty member Judy Bender is Vocal Director. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Coon Rapids Campus Performing Arts Center. The Feb. 10 show will be an interpreted performance for the hearing impaired. Tickets are $8, available in advance at the College Bookstore or by calling 763-422-3536.
