Anoka-Ramsey Community College Offers New Network Security Certificate

Computer networking skills are in high demand these days, especially when combined with an understanding of key network security issues as virus protection and data integrity. Students seeking entry into the booming network security field can now earn a one-year, 16- to 18-credit Network Security Certificate at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

The future is bright for those with the proper training. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, computer support specialists and systems administrators are projected to be among the fastest growing occupations over the 2002-2012 period. Further, one of the nation’s largest employment outplacement firms, Challenger, Gray & Christmas, has dubbed IT Security Specialist as the “hottest job for 2004.”

Anoka-Ramsey Community College offers preparation for a wide array of networking careers through its Computer Networking and Telecommunications (CNET) Department. Students can earn a two-year Associate in Science Degree in CNET, a one-year certificate in Network Support and Administration, and a one-year certificate in Computer Help Desk Specialist Certificate.

Students interested in becoming a network security specialist will ideally combine a Network Security Certificate with additional CNET training, says Steve Reed, Director of the CNET and Cisco Academy programs at Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC).

“Network security is not an entry-level job,” Reed says. However, he adds, by pursuing any of the other CNET tracks offered at ARCC, students can gain good preparation for the Network Security program.

The Network Security Certificate can also offer a solid route to career advancement for current CNET professionals. “For those with the right training, it’s a growing field, and the demand for credentialed employees will only increase,” Reed says.

The CNET Department encourages anyone interested in the Network Security Certificate to contact Steve Reed at 763-422-3623.
