Anoka-Ramsey student wins conservation district video contest

August 13, 2018

Julia Fultz-Flores, a student at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, won the grand prize in the first video contest held by the Anoka Conservation District.

In an effort to encourage youth in the community to learn about their natural environment, the contest called for videos about storm water, the issues involved in storm water management and the actions people can take to reduce negative effects of storm water. With its first video contest, the conservation district also encouraged students to learn how to communicate effectively with their peers using multimedia.

After creating a video as part of a class project in Instructor Kristen Genet’s Environmental Science course, Fultz-Flores entered the video in the contest. The entries were judged by a panel of seven judges from Anoka County, and the conservation district made the final award decisions. The video Fultz-Flores created, “Open Your Eyes to Freshwater’s Demise,” received the grand prize.

“Although it was not a requirement for my Anoka-Ramsey Community College students to submit their final videos for the contest, I encouraged them to take a chance,” said Genet. “For one of my students, that chance paid off in the form of a $600 Grand Prize! I am so proud of her!”

The district held an awards ceremony at Ham Lake Park on July 16, and published the winning videos on their website. The grand prize video, “Open Your Eyes to Freshwater’s Demise,” can be viewed at https://youtu.be/XBY0TlrUAGg.
