Computer Requirements

Minimum requirements are necessary to successfully participate in an online course.

Browsers Internet Explorer 5.0 and up recommended
Media Macromedia Flash Player
Windows Operating System Windows 98 and up
Internet Connection Internet access is required in order to take an online class.
The minimum requirement is a 56K modem (dial-up connection)
JavaScript

Java VM has to be enabled in order to use the D2L.

  • In Internet Explorer: go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and scroll down to the Microsoft VM and make sure that JT Compiler for virtual machine is enabled.
  • Netscape: go to Edit, Preferences, select Advanced, and make sure that Enable Java and Enable JavaScript is enabled.
Screen Resolution

Recommended screen resolution for D2L is 1024 by 768 pixels.

To change the resolution you can do the following:

  • Right click somewhere on your desktop (desktop is the area of the screen which icons and windows appear).
  • Click on Properties (A display properties screen will open).
  • Click on Settings.
  • Under Screen resolution drag the pointer to the right until the numbers beneath read 1024 by 768 pixels.
  • Click OK.

Free Student Email Account

All students are required to have a free Metnet email account. Students can activate their Metnet email by going to www.metnet.edu/initiate and following the instructions.

Students may register for an online course in person at the college registration window or online at http://www.anokaramsey.edu/Admissions/IagreeIdisagree.cfm.

Initial Login

NOTE: If logging in to Desire2Learn before the first day of the class, the course will NOT be associated to your account, even if you have already registered for an online course. Courses will be added on the first day of the semester.

To login to Desire2Learn, your username is your Student ID Number (Tech ID), and your default password will be one of the following:

  1. Birthdate in YYMMDD format (i.e. 800105, for January 5, 1980)
  2. The last six digits of your social security number
  3. If neither of the above work leave it blank

Desire 2 Learn Login Page

Students will be able to login into D2L 25 days before the semester starts, but not access their courses until the first date of the semester.

Course Home is where you will find the course syllabus, calendar, important dates, and your personal preferences.

Content

This is the area that an instructor might use to post course materials and summarize weekly activities.

Classlist

This is the area where you will see a list of your classmates. You will be able to email your instructor and your classmates by clicking on their email address. Users that are currently online will be highlighted in yellow. You can also page them by using this button D2L Pager Icon.

Chat
This is an online interactive area. Click on chat to view current available chat titles. On the right side of the screen you will see the number of participants and chat entries. Click on the title of the chat you would like to enter. (Chatrooms are reserved for course related discussions).

To take part in a chat, enter text and click add.

Discussion
This is a public posting area where everybody in the class can participate. You enter the discussion board by clicking on a discussion topic.

To add a message, simply click on the add message button located on the top right-hand side of your screen.

DropBox/Assignment Box
This is the area where you will be turning in your assignments. To submit your assignments click dropbox on the course navigation bar. Your assignments will be listed under the folder list . Open the folder of the assignment that you would like to submit.

To submit a file click the browse button and search for the files that you would like to upload. Click upload , and then click done . If you wish to view a file you have already submitted simply click on the view submitted file button on the bottom right hand side of the screen.

Grades
You can check your course grades by clicking grades located on the course navigation menu.

Quizzes
If your instructor decides to use this tool, your quizzes will appear on the site on the date specified by your instructor.

Locker
This is an area where you can upload and store personal files. (ONLY COURSE RELATED FILES).

To upload a file click upload new file, click browse and choose the file that you would like to upload. Click open.
