What Is Upward Bound?
During tutoring sessions, an Upward Bound advisor and a tutor will be at each target high school two times per week to assist students with homework, college applications, financial aid, and scholarships. The advisor will meet with students individually to track students' progress on grades, attendance, GPA, classes, etc.
Saturday sessions occur one time every other month and attendance is required. These mandatory sessions are scheduled ahead of time. They allow students to focus on topics related to college preparation. Examples of activities are ACT, GRAD, PLAN preparation sessions, career exploration, college visits, and educational field trips.
Upward Bound summer program is a 6-week enhancement program that prepares students for the next school year. It begins mid-June and finishes the end of July of every year. 123 Upward Bound students from Braham, Cambridge-Isanti, Mora, North Branch, Princeton, and St. Francis high schools come to the Cambridge Campus of Anoka-Ramsey Community College for classes. Each summer Upward Bound hires K-12 licensed teachers to teach classes that include math, English, lab science, and a foreign language.
During the summer program, students take classes three days a week. On Mondays, students experience learning through educational field trips. Transportation is provided free of charge.
Senior Summer Bridge component is designed to assist students in transitioning from high school to college during the summer after high school graduation. TRIO offers students the opportunity to enroll in a transferable college class at the Cambridge Campus. (See the UB Policy Manual for more information)
