Golden Rams Women’s Basketball Team Returns From Arizona Defeated, Yet Confident

November 19, 2009

Anoka-Ramsey Community College Golden Rams Women’s Basketball team just returned from Yuma, Ariz. where they played in the Desert Classic, Nov. 13-15.

On Thursday Anoka-Ramsey took on the host school Arizona Western and lost by eight points, 68 – 60.

“We definitely had some bright spots and if we could have made some free throws the outcome could easily have been different,” says Anoka-Ramsey Head Coach, Dave DeWitt. “We shot 12 for 22 from the free throw line the second half after going 4 for 5 the first half. We also had an eight-minute stretch in the second half where we didn’t score a point and that didn’t help matters either.”

None the less, the Golden Rams battled a highly regarded Division I JUCO right down to the wire. Stephanie Pilgrim, a freshman from Osseo, Minn. and Marie Hanson, a freshman from Cambridge, Minn. paced the scoring attack with 14 points each. Hanson also added 7 rebounds to go with her 14 points. Alyssa Silva, a sophomore from Maple Grove, Minn. added 10 points.

Friday, the Golden Rams played Yavapai, another highly regarded Division I JUCO and lost 79-69.

“We looked tired, and played that way as well,” comments DeWitt.

Tied at 36 at half time and paced largely by Hanson’s 20 first half points, Anoka-Ramsey just couldn’t sustain the energy needed to play against taller and more athletic players for the entire game.

Hanson finished the game with 29 points going 7 for 14 from behind the arc. She also hauled down 9 rebounds. The only other player in double figures for Anoka-Ramsey was Stephanie Pilgrim with 15 points.

It was a good trip, according to DeWitt. “We played top flight competition and, even though we lost, it will only make us better and more confident. The players had a good time being away, and trips like this are always good for team chemistry and bonding.”

Anoka-Ramsey now stands 2 – 2 on the season and will head to Brainerd, Minn. next for the Central Lakes College Invite. The will play Mesabi, Friday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m., and Central Lakes, Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.

Anoka-Ramsey opens their home season, Friday, Nov. 27, 5 p.m., taking on Central Lakes again and Saturday, Nov. 28, 1 p.m., playing NIACC.
