Last weekend, Nov. 21-22, the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Golden Rams men’s basketball team defeated Mesabi 88-71, and lost to Central Lakes 79-67 at the Central Lakes Classic.
Golden Rams opened got off to a fast start with consecutive three-pointers by Trey Scott and Quincy Bethea Jr. at Friday’s game. The hot start continued throughout the first half as Anoka-Ramsey opened a 16-point lead at the break, 47-31. The Golden Rams shot a blistering 58.3 percent in the opening half and forced 15 Mesabi turnovers.
Anoka-Ramsey led by as many as 22 in the second half before Mesabi made a big run and closed the deficit to four with over seven minutes remaining. In the end Anoka-Ramsey was able to hold on for the 88-71 victory thanks to an increased defensive effort.
The Golden Rams had four players in double figures led by Scott (21 points and three steals) and followed by Kenan Kent (17 points, 14 rebounds), Josh Franklin (14 points, three steals) and Bethea Jr. (13 points, six assists, five rebounds).
The Golden Rams once again got off to a fast start shooting 51.6 percent from the field in the first half to take a 38-33 halftime lead in Saturday’s game. But poor shot selection, and poor defense in the second half allowed Central Lakes to make numerous runs to take an 18 point second half lead 71-53. The Golden Rams were able to battle back and cut the deficit to seven late in the game, but it wasn’t enough as Central Lakes held on for the 79-67 win. The second half proved to be the difference as Central Lakes shot 52 percent and made all 18 of their free throw attempts, compared to Anoka-Ramsey’s 31.3 percent shooting, and two made free throws.
Bethea Jr. was the only Golden Ram in double figures finishing with 25 points including six of 10 three-point attempts. Bethea also had five rebounds and five assists.
The Golden Rams are now 2-3 for the season.
Up next are four games. Beginning Friday, Nov. 27, 7 p.m., Anoka-Ramsey once again faces Central Lakes; Saturday, Nov. 28, 3 p.m., the Golden Rams have a rematch against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) The Golden Rams lost to NIACC in their second game of the season 96-84. The following weekend, Friday, Dec. 4, 8 p.m. the Golden Rams play Northland College; Saturday, Dec. 5, 3 p.m. the Golden Rams take on Itasca Community College. All home games are played at the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Coon Rapids Campus Gymnasium.
