Anoka-Ramsey Community College Golden Rams Get Two on the Road

December 17, 2010

Anoka-Ramsey Community College Golden Rams Women’s basketball team played hard to win two away games last weekend.

Against conference opponent, Vermilion Community College (4-3, 1-2 MCAC), Friday, Dec. 10 in Ely, Minn., Anoka-Ramsey was in command from the start, led by the sharp shooting of freshman Allison Ballstadt who scored 16 points going 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Defensive awareness and transition baskets put the Golden Rams up 47-17 by halftime. Anoka-Ramsey ran away with a 77-30 win, holding Vermilion to only 13 second-half points and 28 percent shooting from the field.

Sophomore Stephanie Pilgrim led all Golden Rams in scoring, going 5-for-12 from 3-point range resulting in 17 points while compiling seven rebounds for the night. Fellow sophomore Mallory Cramer added 13 points shooting 6-for-11 for the game, along with grabbing six rebounds.

Following the game, the #2 nationally-ranked Golden Rams faced #5 nationally-ranked Mesabi Range Community & Technical College, Saturday, Dec. 11 in Virginia, Minn. Anoka-Ramsey jumped on Mesabi to command an early lead only to see it dissipate quickly.  Mesabi responded by tying the game 29-29 going into halftime.

Throughout the second half, both teams put forth strong defensive and offensive efforts.  With Mesabi Range (6-2, 4-2 MCAC) taking a 6-point lead midway through the second half, the Golden Rams (9-1, 3-0 MCAC) fought back with a barrage of stops and scores.  Anoka-Ramsey freshman Tacita Gonzalez defensively ignited the #2 ranked Golden Rams to help the team defeat #5 ranked Mesabi Range, 66-61.

It was a complete team effort by the Golden Rams with five players scoring in double figures.  Pilgrim recorded 12 points and five rebounds alongside freshman, Tamarra Shorter, who with a double-double, contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Sophomore, Alexis Holt, shot 5-for-6 from the field, totaling 12 points while Gonzalez added four assists.  Mayville State recruit, Marie Hanson attained 11 points, and dished out three assists and nabbed three steals.

The Golden Rams (9-1, 3-0 MCAC) will host their annual Anoka-Ramsey Community College Classic this weekend at the Coon Rapids Campus. Anoka-Ramsey will play DII Bismarck State College (10-2) Friday, Dec 17, 4 p.m.;   MCAC opponent, Vermilion Community College in a rematch, Saturday, Dec. 18, 6 p.m.

Anoka-Ramsey is currently ranked #2 nationally in the NJCAA.
