D2L Help

I hope you are having an enjoyable break!  I suspect many of you are also busy preparing for the upcoming semester and may need some support with D2L work.  With that in mind, here is the guideline that summarizes the standard D2L support that is available to you. 

Please review the attached document and keep in mind…

1.It is the responsibility of the faculty member to request creation of a D2L course and that the support person be granted rights to that course (see the end of this email for a copy of the message sent out by Rita Resendiz on how to make such a request).

2.Support staff are unable to provide any assistance until after faculty request the assignment of secretarial rights (I believe it takes 1 day to complete that task once the request is made).

3.Faculty roles/rights and secretarial roles/rights are different.

4.Do not share your ID or password with anyone.  At no time is it acceptable for support staff to use faculty user IDs/passwords to perform tasks associated with the faculty role/rights.

5.If you need help learning a task specific to your faculty role/right, contact Rita Resendiz for assistance.

Spring 2011 D2L courses are ready for mapping.  If you have special requests (like help importing previous course data into new courses) or need to combine courses, please indicate this in the comments box when filling in the “Request D2L Course Creation” form. [Note: Faculty should list who should have secretary rights in the “Comments” box.]

To request a Spring 2011 D2L course:

1.Go to the Anoka-Ramsey Community College web site

2.Click on Employee Home

3.Click on Desire2Learn (D2L)

4.Type in your D2L Username and Password

5.Click Login

6. Click on the “Faculty helpdesk” blue graphic on the right side of the screen

7.Type in your Tech ID

8.Type in your PIN

9.Select the appropriate semester (Spring 2011)

10.Make sure “Request D2L Course Creation” is selected

11.Click Submit

Campus Now Offers Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA/HHA) Program

The Cambridge Campus will begin offering a non-credit certified nursing assistant/home health aide (CNA/HHA) program this February. In only 72 hours, students can gain the training and skills necessary for an in-demand healthcare career that helps others and makes an impact on their quality of life. 

Upon program completion, graduates will be eligible for a CNA/HHA certificate and, after passing the CNA state exam, be registered on the Minnesota CNA State Registry.

The combined CNA/HHA program is state-approved.  Participants will:

  • learn basic nursing skills, including how to read and record a client’s vital signs and how to care for individuals in nursing homes, hospices, rehabilitation facilities, convalescent homes, hospitals and private homes.
  • be supervised and guided by a registered nurse while practicing in the laboratory and clinical settings.
  • prepare to take the state nursing assistant test required for employment in long-term care facilities throughout Minnesota.

The cost is $699 plus materials, and there are two options. Option 1 runs Saturdays, Feb. 5 – March 26, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes practice in a clinical setting, March 27 – 31, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Option 2 runs Mondays and Tuesdays, Feb. 7 – March 8,  4 to 9 p.m., and includes practice in a clinical setting, March 9 – 15, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Individuals may be eligible for tuition assistance for the CNA/HHA program through a U.S. Department of Labor grant awarded to the Healthcare Alliance.

African Student Association Civil Rights Research Tour

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College African Student Association (ASA) is planning a Civil Rights Research Tour during Spring Break 2011. The goal is to document findings from this research tour by way of movie documentary. We would like to create this movie to be used in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, local community classrooms and at Anoka-Ramsey as a learning tool for teachers, and faculty. This movie will be featured in April during the 2nd Annual Cultural Awareness Day.

In order to create the most beneficial learning experience for our community members, it would behoove the ASA to create a planning team for the upcoming research tour. We are looking for three faculty members, an administrator, and a staff member (five persons total) that would help us design this experience similar to a common course outline or course experience. We need to determine learning objectives and learning outcomes for the students who participate and the community members who will view the movie. We will also need to develop qualitative questions for the interview portions of the documentary. If you are interested, please email ASA President, Anthony Jones. We thank you in advance.


Scholardazzle to be Held January 21

As most of you know, each year employees and departments create gift baskets to be auctioned off at Scholardazzle.  Basket themes have included (but are not limited to): Woods of Minnesota, Italian Dinner, Winter Wonderland, Health Supplie, a Dog basket, Night at the Theatre...the list grows each year with the imagination of the creator(s).  In total, the baskets brought in over $1,000 last year. The baskets were so well received last year that we would like to continue the tradition! 

If you create a basket, please contact Kelly Torok-Linder for a Donation form and be sure to have it filled out and back to her by Wednesday, Jan. 12.  The baskets should be completed and received by Kelly by Jan. 18!  If you have any questions or ideas, please notify Marc Johnson.

We really need your help again this year!  You all have been so helpful in previous years. 

Below is a list of tasks that need to be done.  We especially need help with door prize request and pick-ups.

1)  Door prize request and pick-up (I would like to have all the door prizes by Friday, Jan. 28).  I will give you a list of 5-10 area businesses (depending on how much you can do and how many volunteer for this task) to contact.  I will also give you a script and thank you note for the business when you pick up the door prize.

*We need to start this process at the beginning of January, please consider helping out with this!*

2)  filling bags with sand and candles(to be done Friday, Feb. 4, 11am),

3)  setting luminaries out on the trail (approximately 3 pm on Sat. Feb. 5),

4)  lighting luminaries once they are set out,

5)  manning the goodies table,

6)  picking up the luminaries after the event.

Dear Reader,

My name is Steven Selin. I am a student attending Anoka Ramsey community College. Samantha Doluweera has been my math tutor all throughout my fall semester. The skills, kindness and understanding she has acquired throughout her life really astonish me. Personally, math has never been a very easy subject for me. But Samantha is always patient, optimistic and takes the time to help me understand in a way that really builds my confidence level. She has a very big heart and I can tell that she wants the very best for me. I can honestly say that she is the best math teacher I have ever had in my life. I look forward to working with her in the future! She is TRULY amazing and special!!!

Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE)

This spring, Anoka-Ramsey Community College has an opportunity to participate in a national survey focusing on teaching, learning, and retention in community colleges. The project is housed within The Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin.

Research shows that the more actively engaged students are—with college faculty and staff, with other students, with the subject matter being learned—the more likely they are to persist in their college studies and to achieve at higher levels. Identifying what our students do in and out of the classroom, knowing their goals, and understanding their external responsibilities can help us create an environment that can enhance student learning, development, and retention.

The survey will be administered in classes randomly selected by CCSSE to ensure a representative sample and to preserve the integrity of the survey results. Instructors whose classes are selected for survey administration will receive specific information from the appropriate administrator.

Anoka-Ramsey is intent on being a leader in education, and this survey can assist us in identifying where we are and what further action may be helpful in our continuing work to support and strengthen teaching and learning. Your cooperation and participation in this exciting national survey are sure to enhance our educational programs and services to students.

2011-2012 Budgets

Welcome back from winter break and Happy New Year! It is now time to begin working on budgets for the 2012 fiscal year beginning July 1, 2011. Each dean or supervisor now has access to their budget packets located HERE. Included in each packet are forms for supplemental equipment, supplemental furniture, Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) requests and the spending plan for each cost center.

Completed budget packets should be returned to your dean or supervisor by March 1, 2011. Deans and supervisors must finalize budget packets by April 1, 2011.

Remember in each folder is also a copy of the Strategic Initiative Proposal (SIP) documents that can be completed and returned to your dean/supervisor by Feb. 11, 2011. Please email Kelsey Schwarzrock (x1507) with any questions about the SIP process.



Music Faculty Gets Hometown Recognition

Anoka-Ramsey's own Music Faculty member, Rich Manik, received some much deserved recognition in his hometown newspaper, the SouthHills Tribune, recently.

A music teacher for more than a decade, Rich has played around the Twin Cities with such local legends as Mick Sterling and the Stud Brothers, which was inducted into the Mid-America Music Hall of Fame last summer, and most recently with the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra.

Healthy Food Delivered Right to Campus through Wellness Works

As part of its mission to increase employee health and well-being, the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Wellness Works program brought the opportunity to buy fresh, organic-certificate seasonal produce delivered to the campus last summer, and MaryAnn Larios was a ready participant.

“My husband and I had been researching Community Sustained Agriculture or CSAs for years,” says MaryAnn.  “Simply, we wanted to support local organic farmers and increase our own health.  When Anoka-Ramsey became a drop off site for the Women’s Environmental Institute (WEI) CSA, we knew we wanted to try it out.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, community supported agriculture (CSA), or subscription farming, is a new idea in farming that has been gaining momentum since its introduction from Europe in the mid-1980s. The CSA concept originated in the 1960s in Switzerland and Japan, where consumers interested in safe food and farmers seeking stable markets joined together. Today, there are more than 400 CSA farms in the U.S.

Wellness Works partnered with WEI to provide college employees the opportunity to buy a share in the farm. Twenty-one employees bought a full or partial share. Buying a share is like a pledge to support the farm operation, sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Typically, members or shareholders pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer's salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm's bounty throughout the growing season.

“My share, which I split with two of my sisters, was a great opportunity to prepare and eat vegetables that I had not eaten before,” says MaryAnn. “Our weekly box included both common and uncommon (at least to me) vegetables such as rutabaga, soup greens, soup kale, basil, turnips, red cabbage, broccoli, tatsoi, a variety of potatoes, onions, garlic, fresh herbs, summer and winter squash and a variety of apples.”

MaryAnn found the cost of her weekly share to be comparable to purchasing the produce in a grocery store but noted that all CSA food was organic so it actually turned out to be a good value. Better still, she says, was the weekly reminder to eat healthy.

“I can guarantee you will be inspired to eat healthier,” says MaryAnn. “I think it is great that Anoka-Ramsey helps us [college employees] live a healthier lifestyle with this programming.  The introduction of new, healthy lifestyle options in this program can give us all an incentive to try new ways to increase our physical and mental well being.”

The Wellness Works program plans to bring the CSA option back in the spring of 2011 with a brown bag information session in early April. For more information about the CSA program or other Wellness Works benefits, visit the Wellness Works Web page.


Recipes Too!

Each week, along with fresh, organic produce, the share contains recipes using whatever is in the box.

Here is one of Mary Ann’s favorite recipes from last summer.

Zucchini Yeast Bread

1 pound (3 ½ cups grated zucchini

2 Tablespoons salt (I use less)

2 teaspoons dry yeast

1 ¼ cups lukewarm water

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Olive oil, for brushing

1. In a colander, alternate layers of grated zucchini & salt.  Let sit for 30 minutes, then squeeze out moisture with your hands.

2. Combine the yeast with ¼ cup of lukewarm water, stir & let sit for 15 minutes to dissolve yeast.

3. Place the zucchini, yeast & flour in a bowl.  Stir together & add just enough of the remaining water to obtain a rough dough.

4. Transfer to a floured surface & knead until smooth & elastic.  Return the dough to the bowl, cover with a plastic bag, and set aside to rise in a warm place until doubled in volume; about 1 ½ hours.

5. Grease a baking sheet.  Punch down the risen dough with your fist and knead into a tapered cylinder.  Place on a baking sheet & let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.

6. Preheat oven to 425.  Brush the bread with olive oil and bake for 40 minutes or until loaf is a golden color.  Cool on rack before serving.

Grant Update

The Office of Institutional Advancement and the grant development staff has recently been working with some of our tremendous fellow faculty and staff on the following grant efforts:

Funding Agency:  Corporation for National and Community Service and Serve Minnesota (AmeriCorps)

With this proposal we will be seeking funding to continue the Minnesota College Success Corps, which recruits, trains and directs the efforts of AmeriCorps members in providing tutoring, supplemental instruction and mentoring to students enrolled in developmental mathematics, reading, and English writing courses. We want these students to succeed! Our request is for funds to support 20 members who will give 1,700 hours of service over a 12-month period.  This request will be for three years of funding at $275,000 per year.

Funding Agency:  US Department of Education, TRiO Talent Search Program

With this proposal we requested funding to begin a new precollege preparation and access program to assist 500 low-income and first-generation junior and senior high school students to be prepared for and enroll in a postsecondary program of study after high school graduation. Partnering organizations include Brooklyn Junior High School, Park Center Senior High School, Champlin Park High School and Coon Rapids High School. This request is for five years of funding at $230,000 per year.

Funding Agency:  National Science Foundation

With this proposal we will be seeking funding to support the research/course development efforts of one of our faculty members with a background that is under-represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This program is intended to help build diversity within faculty and student ranks in these disciplines. This request will be for two years of funding for approximately $175,000 per year.

Funding Agency: Minnesota State Arts Board

With this proposal we will be seeking funding to support the creation of media and educational presentations of some of Minnesota’s preeminent ceramic artists.  This program is intended to raise awareness and appreciation for Minnesota’s truly outstanding ceramic artists and their work. Partners include the Northern Clay Center and many independent artists. This request will be for one year of funding at approximately $65,000.

We are truly excited to be engaged in these efforts to do good work that is supportive of the mission and goals of our community college.

The PTA program on the Coon Rapids campus is excited to expand their student run clinic beginning this spring! 

This fall they implemented their first on-campus clinic experience with the Anoka-Ramsey Community College student athletes with a huge success!  They are now ready to expand and offer their services to faculty and staff.

Beginning the week of Jan. 18 appointments will be available during the following days and times:

    •Mondays from 9 to 11 a.m., and Noon to 2 p.m.

    •Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    •Fridays from Noon to 2 p.m.

Clients who qualify for services will be employees of Anoka-Ramsey Community College (including student workers) suffering from minor pain or injury such as back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome or post surgical injuries.  You must also be uninsured or have been denied Physical Therapy services through your current insurance.

"I took Tom McCarthy's Public Speaking class and as scary as the class was, I got so much out of it. I have a love/hate relationship with any communication class, whether it being a writing or speech class. They can be intimidating to walk into but rewarding to walk away from. Improving your speech, vocabulary and communications skills are so important for living a well-rounded life. Change from four to five credits.  Rationale: The purposes of this proposed change are threefold: 1) to better align the ARCC language program with that of other community colleges throughout the metro area; 2) to better prepare our students who will transfer to other language programs, particularly to the University of Minnesota and other colleges and universities on a five credit program for language courses; and 3) to ensure that the content of our courses better reflects and addresses the goals as stated in the course descriptions and common course outlines.  With the exception of ARCC and NHCC (which is also considering proposing to add a credit), all other colleges in the metro area offer language courses at five credits .The importance of offering 5-credit language courses in the metro area is that many of our students transfer to the University of Minnesota, which also has a 5-credit-based language program. Ninety percent of students that transfer to the University from community colleges will study in the College of Liberal Arts, which requires two years of foreign language.  Studying languages on a 4-credit basis puts our students at a disadvantage, as compared with students from other metro area community colleges transferring to the University of Minnesota or, for that matter, to any other institution.   Moving to 5 credits, as other metro area institutions have done, would enable us to cover the grammar listed in our common course outlines and to reinforce it through meaningful proficiency-oriented exercises (as indicated in the course description) .  As a result students would be better prepared for future language studies either here at Anoka-Ramsey or at a transfer institution.

I am pleased to announce Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s nominees for the Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching:

Melissa Bergstrom , Music (Coon Rapids)

More than 170 students, faculty, and staff submitted nominations for more than 100 different instructors, which clearly speaks to the impact that outstanding teachers can have on their students and their peers.

After an initial screening for eligibility (full-time faculty member with three years of service) and number of nominations, the nominating committee used a rubric-based process to evaluate the narrative evidence in the nomination, based on the four selection criteria:  teaching strategies and materials; content expertise and professional growth; service to students, profession, institution, and system; and standards for assessment of student learning and performance. For the final selection, the committee reviewed professional development and service that had been institutionally documented.

Please join me in congratulating all three of our nominees and offering particular encouragement to them as they prepare their teaching portfolios for system review.

College to Build Health & Wellness Center on Coon Rapids Campus

The MnSCU Board of Trustees approved the funding for construction of a Health and Wellness Center at the Coon Rapids Campus. Request for construction bids will be going out this spring.

English Faculty Publishes First Book of Poetry

Parallel Press recently published a poetry collection by English instructor, Tracy Youngblom, titled, “Driving to Heaven.” This is Youngblom’s first collection.

Students, faculty members and staff are invited to join the free celebration of this accomplishment, Thursday, Feb. 3 at The Corner Bar (1501 S. Washington Ave., Minneapolis) at 7:30 p.m. The book will be on sale, and Youngblom will be available for signing.

A review by Midwest Book Review calls the book, “a quiet intensity pervades this emotional and memorable collection.”

Tracy holds a master of arts in English and a master of fine arts in Poetry from Warren Wilson College. Her poems have appeared in many journals, including “Shenandoah,” “Loonfeather,” “Briar Cliff Review,” “North Stone Review,” “Poetry East,” “Potomac Review,” “Cortland Review” and others, along with the anthologies “33 Minnesota Poets” and “In a Fine Frenzy.” She is the poetry editor for the online journal “Emprise Review.”

Candlelight Ski

Saturday, Feb. 5, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Candlelight Ski is a free annual event that encourages participants to get out and enjoy a beautiful evening in the Spirit River Nature Area - Cross country ski trails.  Approximately two miles of the ski trials are lined with luminaries that create a unique experience.  A blue grass band will perform in the food court from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and door prizes will be given out at 7:30 p.m.  Hot chocolate and goodies are available for participants. Everyone is welcome.

Yesterday the business office spent a lot of money, $16,152,911.

  • We disbursed financial aid.
  • 2,619 checks were printed and mailed
  • 1,278 direct deposits were processed and mailed
  • 580 invoices were sent
  • Almost 4,500 envelopes were stuffed and mailed.

I want to commend Diane DenBeste and the Business Office, they worked together as a team to get this all done without any overtime. In addition, we could not have got this project done without the Call Center. Central Services prepared the 4,500 envelopes that had to be folded and run through the postage machine. I want to thank each and every one of them.  I know our students have been anxiously awaiting these funds.

Creative Writing Articulation Agreement Signing & Information Session

You and your students are invited to join in a celebration – a creative writing articulation agreement signing and information session!

Anoka-Ramsey Community College President Jessie Stumpf and Hamline University’s Dean of the Graduate School of Liberal Studies Mary Rockcastle will sign an articulation agreement allowing Anoka-Ramsey students who earn the Associate in Arts Degree with an emphasis in Creative Writing to transfer directly into Hamline’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing. The event includes light refreshments and an opportunity to talk with Mary Rockcastle about Hamline’s BFA and MFA in Creative Writing.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College Presents a Discussion with Penumbra Theater

The English Division at Anoka-Ramsey Community College is pleased to announce its first event in the spring 2011 Two River Reading Series on the Coon Rapids Campus.

Associate Director Dominic Taylor, Education Director Sarah Bellamy, and cast members from St. Paul’s Penumbra Theatre Company will lead a reading and discussion of August Wilson’s play “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” on Wednesday, Feb. 16 from 12 to 12:50 and again at 1 to 1:50 p.m. in the Legacy Room. Set in 1927 in a run-down recording studio in Chicago, legendary blues singer Ma Rainey arrives to record some of her old favorites. This famous play propels us forward into a riveting portrayal of racism, self-hate due to racism, and exploitation. The public is invited to attend this free event.

“The English and Reading departments recognize the importance of a ‘common-book’ experience on our college campus, and we think it's important that our students have the opportunity of reading a book and then meeting the person who wrote that book, or in this case, meeting a respected scholar who has in-depth knowledge of both the playwright and the work itself.  We also recognize the opportunities for growth, awareness, understanding, and change that students might experience though reading literature, especially in a program like this,” says Scott Stankey, English Division Faculty member. Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s Two Rivers Reading Series presents visiting award-winning authors, poets, and playwrites each semester.

As a follow-up, students/alumni, faculty, and staff are invited to Anoka-Ramsey Day at the Guthrie for a performance of Wilson’s play and a post-play discussion, Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. For more information about purchasing tickets for this event, contact Michael Wall at x1597. These events are part of an ongoing partnership between ARCC and Penumbra Theater.



Anoka-Ramsey Players Claim Third Player of the Week Nod

For the third time in four weeks, an Anoka-Ramsey Community College Women’s Basketball player has been named MCAC Southern Division Player of the Week.

The week ending Jan. 1, Tamarra Shorter, a freshman from Osseo High School, was named player of the week. The week ending Jan. 15, Mallory Cramer, a sophomore from Minneapolis South High School was MCAC player of the week AND NATIONAL Player of the week.

Now Stephanie Pilgrim, a sophomore from Osseo High School, has been named MCAC Southern Division Player of the week for the week ending Jan. 22. In two games last week, Pilgrim averaged 18.5 points and five rebounds per game while shooting 54% from the field and 54% from behind the arc.

Anoka-Ramsey, 19-1 on the season and ranked #1 in the country won both games. Anoka-Ramsey beat Central Lakes 78-38 and #9 ranked MN West 68-66. In the MN West game Anoka-Ramsey came back from a 20-point deficit with 15 minutes to go to eek out the win.

Pilgrim is the daughter of Jim and Marsha Pilgrim, of Maple Grove Minn.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College is a Division III Junior College located in Coon Rapids, Minn. and competes in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference. They have won six National Championships, the most recent in 2007 and been to the National tournament 10 times. In 2010, the Golden Rams finished 3rd at the National Tournament.


Student Leadership Stipends Awarded

Congratulations to the following Coon Rapids Campus student leaders. These students were granted Student Leadership Stipends for their contributions to Anoka-Ramsey Community College during Fall Semester 2010.  Awards ranging from $100 to $700 are made possible through Student Life.  Award recipients are selected based on the breadth and depth of their voluntary leadership and involvement at ARCC to improve services, activities, procedures, and other aspects of student life.

Business Professionals of American (BPA) Annual Competition

Anoka-Ramsey Community College will welcome the region’s high school Business Professionals of America (BPA).  The annual BPA competition will be  held at Anoka-Ramsey Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011.  Over 200 area high school students will be competing in a variety of business events.  Also on campus will be area high school teachers and representatives from many local businesses.
