Thoughts from Pat Johns
Dear Dr. [Pat] Johns,
I wanted to write today to thank you and your staff for the hard work they graciously helped me with for my town hall meeting last night on green acres at the Cambridge Campus.
We had many more people than were originally expected and your staff was readily willing to help and be accommodating. Specifically, Professor Nancy Boatman voluntarily moved her class to a different classroom to make more space for the meeting. JoAnn Iskierka helped guide people where to go to find the meeting. Greg Strandmark was very helpful in addressing the audio and stage needs for the meeting. Also, Hegino Garcia and Bruce Nelson greatly assisted to ensure that the room had enough chairs and was neat and ready to go for the meeting.
I really appreciate the hard work of your staff to help accommodate the community meeting last night and wanted to be sure to write you today to thank you and to tip my hat to a job well done by your staff.
Thanks again,
Rick Olseen
State Senator Distric 17

College Promotes Violence Prevention with National Expert, Jackson Katz, March 25
Working collaboratively with the Sexual Assault Action Team of Anoka County, Anoka-Ramsey Community College counseling faculty is hosting a community forum on preventing sexual and domestic violence facilitated by nationally-known violence prevention educator, Jackson Katz, Thursday, March 25. The afternoon workshop dealing with sexual violence is already full with more than 200 invited professionals. The public is invited to the free presentation by Katz at the college, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Coon Rapids Campus Performing Arts Center. Katz, a nationally acclaimed educator, author and filmmaker, is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of gender violence prevention education. Katz will lead the training session for professionals and community leaders in the afternoon. In the evening, he will facilitate a mixed-media presentation for the public. His acclaimed program, titled “More Than a Few Good Men,” inspires men and women to confront one of the most serious and persistent problems facing our communities: sexual and domestic violence. Traditionally, these issues have been considered women’s issues. “More Than a Few Good Men,” by contrast, focuses on the lives and attitudes of boys and men. In a provocative presentation that interposes irreverent humor with unpleasant reality, Katz stimulates dialogue between the sexes to illuminate how the problems of individual women and men are linked to larger social forces. Katz has lectured on hundreds of college and high school campuses and conducted hundreds of professional trainings, seminars, and workshops in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and Japan. He is the co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, and director of the first worldwide domestic and sexual violence prevention program in the U.S. Marine Corps. More than 400 invitations were sent to select local business members, school counselors, education centers, law enforcement agencies, political constituents, faith community members, mental health professionals, sports coaches and directors, and non-profit professionals. “The sole purpose of the workshop, and the evening public presentation, is to engage people in the process of ending sexual violence in Anoka and Isanti counties,” says college counselor, John Hennen. “Disturbing numbers of female and male students on both of our campuses have been sexually assaulted. The same is true for the general population in Anoka and Isanti Counties.” “The afternoon professional training provides a forum for Anoka-Ramsey faculty, staff, and administrators to work with education, business, mental health, and other community leaders to increase awareness and address this pressing public health issue,” continues John. “The evening event is a consciousness-raising multi-media presentation that is open to students and the general public.” For more information, contact John Hennen at x1234. |
Nationally-acclaimed violence prevention educator, Jackson Katz (shown) will present "More Than a Few Good Men," a free community forum on preventing sexual and domestic violoence, Thursday, March 25, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Performing Arts Center in Coon Rapids, Minn. |

The Story of the Duluth Lynchings
Presented by Carl Crawford
"We cannot change our past; we can only and must learn from it."
Tuesday, March 30, 10:00 a.m. - Noon
Coon Rapids Campus, Legacy Room
Tuesday, March 30, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Cambridge Campus, TBD
The beginning of the program will start with a brief history of what life was like in 1920 in Duluth, Minn. Mr. Crawford will touch on the job climate and the way of life for many African Americans during that time. The audience will also receive some background information on the alleged crime and the events that led up to the horrible event.
Mr. Crawford will then take the audience through the crime and the night of the lynching. We will discover how history can repeat itself if we are not diligent in working to eradicate prejudices and biases.
In the end of the presentation we will look at some opportunities to heal and talk about solutions. This is a chance for some rich conversation in the room and challenge folks to look in their own backyards. Mr. Crawford will also talk about some of the strategies used to raise funds for the memorial. Mr. Crawford will share some of the exciting things the CJMM board is still working to achieve in the community.
