Retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Esther Tomljanovich will present “Decisions, Decisions–At the Court and In Your Life” Monday, Sept. 10, 6 pm at Anoka Ramsey Community College Coon Rapids Campus. The Student Senate and the League of Women Voters (LWV) ABC League are co-sponsoring this event. The public is invited to attend. Social time and refreshments at 6pm; Justice Tomljanovich’s presentation at 6:30.
Justice Tomljanovich served on Minnesota’s highest court from her appointment in 1990 until retirement in 1998. She was part of the first state supreme court to ever have a female majority. Prior to the Supreme Court, Justice Tomljanovich served as a district court judge where her leadership capabilities led her colleagues to elect her as the first woman assistant chief judge in Minnesota. She broke many barriers when she entered Saint Paul College of Law (now William Mitchell College of Law) and graduated in 1955 as the only woman in her class.
Tomljanovich addressed LWV ABC at an Equal Rights Amendment rally in Anoka in 1977 shortly after being named as a judge for the 10th District Court.
Justice Tomljanovich’s presentation will include a brief synopsis of her background and journey to the bench with an encouraging conversation for being involved and informed and aware of the effects of decisions made along the way, using the two recent amendment decisions as a focus.
