Students Sweep Honor Awards

March 23, 2009

Phi Theta Kappa, Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s honor society, recently announced its All-Minnesota Academic Team and Alpha Delta Upsilon, the Cambridge Campus chapter of society, earned several awards.

All-Minnesota Academic Team
Cambridge students Jahlaynah Arnold and Melissa Riley and Coon Rapids Campus students Nancy Johnson and Kyle Raymond were named to the All-Minnesota Academic Team.

The All-Minnesota Academic Team was introduced nearly 15 years to honor and recognize two-year students for their leadership, academic achievement and community and college service. By recognizing these students, Minnesota demonstrates its commitment to scholarship and community service as essential components in the state’s public community and technical colleges.

ARCC All-Minnesota Academic Team
Four Anoka-Ramsey Community College students earned a spot on the All-Minnesota Academic Team, an award granted by Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two year colleges: (from left) Cambridge Campus Phi Theta Advisor Kathleen Hoffman, Cambridge Campus student Melissa Riley, Coon Rapids Campus student Kyle Raymond, Coon Rapids Campus student Nancy Johnson, Cambridge Campus student Jahkaynah Arnold, and college Director of Marketing and Public Relations Mary Jacobson.

Alpha Delta Upsilon Awards
Individual awards were presented to several Alpha Delta Upsilon members including:

  • Monica Broten: First Place Creative Writing (one in region)
  • Jessi Girard: Honorable mention Decorative Arts and another for Creative Arts
  • Melissa Sorenson: Honorable mention Creative Writing and another as Distinguished Member (three in region)
  • Kathleen Hoffman: Distinguished Advisor

“We are a small chapter on a small campus but we do amazing things,” says college faculty member and chapter advisor, Kathleen Hoffman. “Also, I am so honored to be recognized with the Distinguished Advisor award. It was established by Dennis Anderson at Inver Hills Community College before he died and he was a good friend of mine.”

The Distinguished Member Award is part of the society’s Hallmark Awards Program, a capstone awards competition that recognizes excellence in programs that promote the Phi Theta Kappa four hallmark principles of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

The chapter also received awards, including:

  • First in Service, in part for developing a partnership with area businesses that brought canvass bags to the campus bookstore
  • First in Yearbook for chronicling the chapters activities relating to the society’s hallmarks noted above
  • Regional Service Project Participation Award
  • Alpha Delta Upsilon elected as Southern Region Vice President

Exceptional members, officers, advisors, college administrators and chapters are recognized annually at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention.
