| In recognition of the International Year of Astronomy, the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Coon Rapids Campus Astronomy Club has invited the University of Minnesota Astronomy Department and the Minnesota Planetarium to host “100 Hours of Astronomy at Anoka-Ramsey,” a public event featuring activities and the Exploradome, Thursday, April 2, 5 to 9 p.m., in the college’s large gymnasium. |

| The public is invited to experience the Minnesota Planetarium’s Exploradome, a portable, 25-foot diameter dome offering hands-on, minds-on learning, at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Thursday, April 2, 5 to 9 p.m., in the large gymnasium. The event is sponsored the college’s Astronomy Club and free to all who attend. |
The Exploradome is a portable, immersive learning environment where students experience "hands-on, minds-on" learning. An educational program is delivered underneath a 25-foot diameter dome. Through guided inquiry, based on the Minnesota State Science Standards, students can virtually travel from inside of the subatomic realm to the edge of the known universe.
Along with the Exploradome, the Minnesota Astronomical Society and the University of Minnesota Department of Astronomy will offer booths and plenty of exciting astronomical activities for the family such as: - a guest speaker from the University of Minnesota Department of Astronomy
- a gravity demonstration
- telescopes for gazing
- a cloud chamber illustrating how the earth is bombarded with cosmic rays
- hydro face demonstrations (to illustrate the numerical side of astronomy photos of volunteers are placed into a fluid dynamics simulation, color is mapped to the fluid density and a shock wave is driven through the photo and faces in the photos get blown away)
- slide shows and movies from research being conducted at the University of Minnesota
- cool handouts about the Large Hadron Collider and the university’s outreach program
"This is a great opportunity to show Anoka-Ramsey,” says Matthew Kelm, Anoka-Ramsey student and president of the college’s Astronomy Club. “The Exploradome alone will spark more interest in both younger generations and adults in a topic that is so mind-blowing. An event like this could possibly make kids dream about being the astronaut that first steps foot on Mars or being the engineer who built the rocket that sent man to such far off destinations!" Club events, such as this, are funded by Student Activities fees and approved by Student Government.
