College Hosts Vets Upward Bound Information Nights

April 29, 2008
Anoka-Ramsey Community College is hosting two Veterans Upward Bound Information Nights to inform the veteran community about the Upward Bound program, Tuesday, May 13, Coon Rapids Campus Cafeteria, and Thursday, May 15 Cambridge Campus Rm. E124. Veterans who have served at least 180 days of active duty other than training and have any discharge other than dishonorable, may qualify for this program.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College veteran student worker Chan Phouapradit (right) and Director of Veterans Upward Bound program Phil O'Donnell are thrilled to offer two Veterans Upward Bound Information Nights to help veterans get the support they need to achieve a higher education. Veterans and their family members are encouraged to call O'Donnell at 763-433-1687 for more details.

Veterans Upward Bound is for veterans who want to attend college for the first time, and for veterans who have started and now want to complete their college degree.

The program provides a variety of free services to qualifying veterans including:

  • classes and tutoring to prepare you for college-level work, including math and English
  • help with the college application process
  • career guidance
  • one-on-one advising on issues affecting your college success
  • monthly stipend for active participation

"I believe that the new Veterans Upward Bound program at Anoka-Ramsey Community College provides a vital educational resource for veterans in our area," says new Veterans Upward Bound Program Director Phil O'Donnell. "This program gives much-needed traction in moving forward with their educations and is totally free for eligible veterans."

The Veterans Upward Bound program, structured to serve 120 veterans at Anoka-Ramsey, was made possible through a $1,250,000 TRIO Upward Bound grant received last fall and to be distributed over the next five years. The program offers instruction, tutoring, academic advising, career counseling, and assistance with college applications, the financial aid application process and connecting to community resources. Research proves that veterans in the program increase their chance of academic and personal success through the academic and personal support provided.

"I wish I would have known about Veterans Upward Bound before I started using my GI education benefits," says veteran student worker Chan Phouapradit. "It would have helped me a lot."

To RSVP (optional) for an Information Night, call O'Donnell at 763-433-1687. Veterans are asked to bring their 2007 tax return and their DD2-14 form with them to help determine eligibility.
