College's Auxiliary Services Unit Honored for Excellent Financial Management

February 23, 2007

Minnesota State Colleges and University System (MnSCU) recognized Anoka-Ramsey Community College's (ARCC) Auxiliary Services Unit with the 2006 MnSCU Excellence in Financial Management Award. MnSCU Chancellor Dr. James H. McCormick and Vice Chancellor Laura King arrived at ARCC Feb. 15 to present the award to ARCC staff including: Kimberly Bienfang (Business Office Supervisor), Barb Cooper, Bookstore Coordinator; Jennifer Eng, Director of Fiscal Services & Auxiliary Services; Annette Hughes, Cashier; Noel Lindner, Textbook Manager; Ellie Martin, Cashier; Marilyn Quarberg, Customer Service Specialist, Michael Seymour, ARCC Vice-President; Marilyn Smith, Business Manager; Deb Rock, Taher Dining Director; Jessica Traver, Bookstore Shipping and Receiving and Matt Venneman, Bookstore Manager.

Under the direction of Eng, auxiliary enterprise business practices, policies and procedures were evaluated and documented in a comprehensive, multi-year business plan. This enabled the Auxiliary Services Unit to dramatically improve financial reporting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory planning, shipping and receiving, sales analysis, margin profitability and customer satisfaction in 2006.

"The Auxiliary Services Unit mission is to provide goods and services that contribute to an open-door, comprehensive institution of higher education committed to excellence in teaching and learning," says Eng. "Awards like this recognize the significant contributions the Auxiliary Services Unit makes to the institution, such as the innovations presented by all members of the auxiliary team that have resulted in meeting sales goals."

Collectively, the Auxiliary Services Unit accounts for $3 million dollars in annual sales and operates the bookstores, food services, vending machines, automatic teller machines and coin-operated copiers on both the Cambridge Campus and Coon Rapids campuses.

Details cited by ARCC President, Dr. Patrick M. Johns in his nomination of Auxiliary Services Unit to MnSCU included:

  • collaborative effort of the Cambridge Campus and Coon Rapids Campus bookstores to improve textbook ordering
  • Adjusting to the needs of students and employees
  • Accepting credit card payments and launching a gift certificate debit card program
  • Financial management that made funds available to allow food service at the Cambridge Campus

More About MnSCU Awards
Along with the Excellence in Financial Management awards, initiated in 1999, MnSCU offers an array of awards to publicly recognize the significant contributions and outstanding efforts of the MnSCU's colleges, universities and employees. The MnSCU Excellence in Facilities Management was presented to ARCC Facilities Director Roger Freeman in 2006.

Award winners were selected from nominations made by presidents and college and university leadership.

"These award winners have clearly demonstrated some of the terrific work done at colleges and universities across Minnesota. Their excellent leadership has improved services to students and staff at a time of increasing financial pressures," says Laura M. King, vice chancellor and chief financial officer for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.

Anoka-Ramsey Community College, with campuses in Cambridge and Coon Rapids, has been a leading provider of higher education and training in East Central Minnesota since 1978 and the north suburban area of Minneapolis/St. Paul since 1965. Annually, the college serves more than 9,700 learners of all ages as they pursue associate degrees that transfer as the first two years of a bachelor's degree, or certificate programs that lead immediately to rewarding careers. ARCC is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system comprises 32 state universities, community colleges, technical colleges and combined community and technical colleges located on 53 campuses across the state. The system serves approximately 240,000 students annually in credit-based courses and another 130,000 in non-credit courses.
