NOTE: Students must be accepted into the nursing program to take NURS 1150, 1151, 1152, 1153, 2233, 2235, 2254, 2255, 2256, 2257 and 2258.


NURS 1150 Foundations of Nursing, 7 credits
Prerequisite: Admission to the nursing program.
Corequisite: BIOL 2113, MATH 0110 or successful completion of Nursing Math Competency Exam prior to first class day.
Emphasis is placed on health promotion and health protection within a holistic model of care. The nursing student is introduced to process skills essential to nursing including communication, teaching/learning, research, ethical decision making, and leadership. The nursing process is introduced with an emphasis on physical exam and assessment skills. The course includes didactic and clinical learning, which takes place in long-term care facilities.

NURS 1151 Holistic Care of the Chronically Ill Adult, 6 credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of NURS 1150, BIOL 2113, MATH 0110, or successful completion of Nursing Math Competency Exam.
Corequisites: BIOL 2114 and NURS 1152.
Emphasis is placed on the effective nursing care of adult chronic illness and holistic self-care. Nursing practice supports health promotion, health protection, and health restoration of the chronically ill.

NURS 1152 Pathophysiology for Nurses, 3 credits
Prerequisite: BIOL 2113, MATH 0110, or success-ful completion of Nursing Math Competency Exam. Successful completion of NURS 1150.
Corequisites: BIOL 2114 and NURS 1151.
Emphasis is placed on knowledge and understanding of pathophysiology utilizing body systems approach to diseases of the adult population. The nursing student is introduced to structural and functional abnormalities at the cellular level including biological processes, clinical presentation, manifestations, diagnostics, treatment and complications.

NURS 1153 LPN Transition to RN, 4 credits
Prerequisite: Admission to the LPN to RN option.
This course focuses on the needs of the student returning to the academic environment, and is intended to expand the knowledge and skills of the LPN. This course focuses on the knowledge, skills, values, and experiences needed for the role transition from LPN to RN. Upon completion of the course the student is eligible to enroll in the second year of the nursing program.

NURS 1180 Health Assessment, 3 credits
Prerequisites: Admission to the nursing program
Co requisite: NURS 1181, NURS 1182, BIOL 2113, MATH 0110 or successful completion of nursing math test-out prior to first class day.
This course focuses on the skill set required to perform a comprehensive health history and physical exam. Emphasis is on communication skills which facilitate the development of a holistic data base for health assessment across the lifespan.

NURS 1181 Foundations of Holistic Nursing, 3 credits
Prerequisites: Admission to the nursing program
Co requisite: NURS1180, NURS1182, BIOL2113, MATH 0110 or successful completion of nursing math test-out prior to first class day.
This course introduces the student to the professional discipline of nursing. Phenomena affecting functional, physiologic, psychosocial and environmental health are examined within a holistic model of care. Emphasis is on health promotion and illness prevention with emphasis on the stable older adult population.

NURS 1182 Nursing Interventions I, 2 credits
Prerequisites:Admission to the nursing program
Co requisite: NURS1180, NURS1181, BIOL2113, MATH 0110 or successful completion of nursing
Math test-out prior to first class day.
This clinical course introduces the student to the professional discipline of nursing while providing care to the older adult. Emphasis is on skill development in communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, health education, collaboration and care management while developing a professional practice framework.

NURS 1280 Pathophysiologic Phenomena for Nurses I, 2 credits
Prerequisites: NURS1180, NURS1181, NURS1182,
BIOL 2113; MATH0110 or equivalent test-out.
Co requisite: NURS1281, NURS1282, BIOL2114.
This course focuses on the pathophysiologic processes involving stress responses, immune function, cellular proliferation, fluid / electrolyte and acid/base disturbances and specific disease states in the adult population. As a basis for nursing practice, students will link manifestations, diagnostic studies, complications and disease management modalities to specific pathologic processes and disease states.

NURS 1281 Holistic Nursing Care I, 3 credits
Prerequisites: NURS 1180, NURS 1181, NURS 1182, BIOL 2113, MATH 0110 or equivalent test-out
Co requisite: NURS 1280, NURS 1282, BIOL 2114.
This course expands student understanding of the phenomena affecting functional, physiologic, psychosocial and environmental health within a holistic model of care. Emphasis is on promoting, protecting, and restoring health in adults experiencing illness, linking the pathophysiologic processes to nursing management.

NURS 1282 Nursing Interventions II, 3 credits
Prerequisites: NURS 1180, NURS 1181, NURS 1182, BIOL 2113, MATH 0110 or equivalent test-out
Co requisite: NURS 1280, NURS 1281, BIOL 2114
This clinical course introduces the student to the professional discipline of nursing while providing care in the acute care setting. Emphasis is on continued skill development in communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, health education, collaboration and care management while developing a professional practice framework.

NURS 2250 Clinical Internship, 1 credit
Prerequisites: Successful completion of two semesters in an associate degree nursing program. Acceptance into an approved health care facility clinical internship program, or by agreement and permission by instructor.
This elective clinical internship course provides learning opportunities to apply nursing theory with nursing practice. The focus is on gaining depth of understanding of the role of the registered nurse as well as strengthening nursing skills in the clinical setting. Students will be precepted by nurses in the practice setting and by nurse faculty.

NURS 2254 Holistic Care of the Family, 7 credits
Prerequisite: NURS 1150, 1151, AND 1152, OR 1153.
Corequisite: PSYC 2215 (3rd Semester).
Emphasis is placed on effective nursing care of the family across the lifespan. Family health promotion, protection, and health restoration are introduced. The focus on holistic self care is continued in this course.

NURS 2255 Holistic Care of the Acutely Ill Adult, 8 credits
Prerequisite: NURS 1150, 1151, AND 1152, OR 1153.
Corequisite: PSYC 2215 (3rd semester).
Emphasis is placed on the effective nursing care of the acutely ill adult and holistic self-care. Nursing practice supports health promotion, health protection, and health restoration of the acutely ill adult.

NURS 2256 Leadership I, 1 credit
Prerequisites: NURS 1151, AND 1152, OR 1153.
This course provides an understanding of leadership and management concepts within the practice of professional nursing. The focus is on the nurse as patient care provider and care manager within the current health care delivery system.

NURS 2257 Leadership II, 1 credit
Prerequisites: NURS 2256.
This course will expand on the nurse’s role as leader and explore his/her role as advocate for nursing and change agent within the health care system. The emphasis is now on the potential of the nurses’ role in the current health care delivery system and in the future of health care.

NURS 2258 Preceptorship, 1 credit
Prerequisites: NURS 1150, 1151, 1152.
This course is designed to provide the student with comprehensive clinical experiences. This will be accomplished through a formal triad (learning team) the preceptor, student, and nursing faculty. This direct patient care experience will occur once during the sophomore year of the nursing program.

NURS 2260 Nutrition of the Individual in Health and Illness, 2 credits
Open to RNs, LPNs, and second-year nursing students.
Provides information concerning the correlation between anatomy, physiology, good health and food. Describes the role of nutrients in digestion, absorption and metabolism. Provides information to make wise consumer choices of food selection, labeling and additives. The five stages of the life cycle are discussed. Diet therapy rationale for the pathologic conditions of the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, renal system is presented.

NURS 2263 The Nurse’s Role in Intravenous Therapy, 1 credit
Open to RNs, LPN Mobility students and second-year nursing students.
Emphasis on nursing responsibilities related to intravenous therapy. Standard components of infusion equipment, legal issues, and common policies and procedures of intravenous therapy will be studied. Simulated laboratory experience will provide the student with opportunities to examine and work with components of intravenous therapy.

NURS 2299 Independent Study, 1-3 credits
Prerequisites: Two courses in nursing successfully completed and prior approval of the Dean in charge of nursing.
Designed to offer students the opportunity to do extensive reading or research on a specific topic in nursing.

NURS 2380 Pathophysiologic Phenomena for Nurses II, 2 credits
Prerequisites: NURS 1280, NURS 1281, NURS 1282, BIOL 2114 or NURS 1283, BIOL 2114
Co requisite: NURS 2381, NURS 2382, PSYC 2215
This course focuses on pathophysiologic processes and disease states in specialty populations as a basis for nursing practice. Students will link manifestations, complications, diagnostic studies, and disease management modalities to specific processes and disease states.

NURS 2381 Holistic Nursing Care of Special Populations, 3 credits
Prerequisites: NURS 1280, NURS 1281,
NURS 1282 or NURS1283
Co requisite: PSYC 2215, NURS 2380, NURS 2382
This course expands student understanding of the phenomena affecting functional, physiologic, psychosocial and environmental health within a holistic model of care. Emphasis is on promoting, protecting, and restoring health in special populations, linking the pathophysiologic processes to nursing management.

NURS 2382 Nursing Interventions III, 3 credits
Prerequisites: NURS1280, NURS1281, NURS1282, BIOL2114 or NURS1283, BIOL2114
Co requisite: NURS2380, NURS2381, PSYC2215
This clinical course introduces the student to the professional discipline of nursing while providing care for individuals and families across the lifespan experiencing physical and/or psychological health concerns. Emphasis is on continued skill development in communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, health education, collaboration and care management while developing a professional practice framework.

NURS 2480 Pathophysiologic Phenomena for Nurses III, 2 credits
Prerequisites: All level I Nursing courses,
NURS 2380, NURS 2381, NURS 2382
Co requisite: NURS 2481, NURS 2482
This course focuses on the pathophysoiologic processes in specific disease states in the adult population as a basis for nursing practice. Students will link manifestations, complications, diagnostic studies and disease management modalities to specific pathologic processes and disease states.

NURS 2481 Holistic Nursing Care II, 3 credits
Prerequisites: NURS 2380, NURS 2381, NURS 2382
Co requisite: NURS 2480, NURS 2482
This course continues to expand student understanding of the phenomena affecting functional, physiologic, psychosocial and environmental health within a holistic model of care. Emphasis is on promoting, protecting, and restoring health in individuals and populations experiencing illness, linking pathophysiologic processes to nursing management.

NURS 2482 Nursing Interventions IV, 3 credits
Prerequisites: NURS 2380, NURS 2381, NURS 2382
Co requisite: NURS 2480, NURS 2481
This course integrates knowledge of the clinical practice of nursing while providing care across the lifespan in a variety of settings. Emphasis is on skill mastery in communication, assessment, clinical decision making, caring interventions, health education, collaboration and care management while developing a professional practice framework.

NURS 2584 Pharmacology for Nurses and Related Health Professionals, 2 credits
Prerequisites: Student enrolled in a nursing program, RN or LPN licensure, enrollment in the Clinical
Research Certificate program or instructor consent This course introduces the health professional student to the principles underlying pharmacology. A framework for approaching the study of pharmacotherapeutics will be developed including pharmaceutical research and regulation, major classifications and clinical management.
