MUSC 1100 Music Appreciation, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Historical study of music and its relation to culture and society including a brief survey of the elements of music, incorporating the extensive use of audio recordings. Attendance at a live performance is required.

MUSC 1101 Introduction to World Music, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 7 & 8)
This course is designed to increase students’ understanding of the elements, structure, styles, performance, and power of music throughout the world, specifically exploring music as an art form and cultural influence in diverse, non-Western societies throughout the world and the presence, history, and unique artistic output of those cultures active here in the United States of America. Students will analyze the music of their own heritage, finding their place within global cultures and tracing the influences of those cultures in our local communities. The course will ask students to view and critique a live musical performance to complement the course’s extensive use of audio recordings.

MUSC 1102 Class Guitar, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Class guitar is designed to develop entry-level understanding of beginning guitar technique as well as understanding notation, improvisation, and elementary chord construction. This forum provides opportunity for students to explore their musical aspirations through guitar and expose them to basic musical concepts. Students must provide their own guitar.

MUSC 1103 Class Piano, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Course in basic technique covering keyboard skills, notation and repertoire. For the student without previous keyboard experience or limited piano background. An adult approach for the beginning piano student.

MUSC 1104 Fundamentals of Music, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Basic introduction to music notation and reading instruction in rhythm, note reading, scales, key signatures, intervals, triads and introduction to the piano keyboard, and listening analysis. Intended for students entering fields where some knowledge of music fundamentals is required but who do not plan a music major, or those desiring to improve music reading skills.

MUSC 1105 Applied Lesson, 1 credit
Private instruction in music—vocal or instrumental. Extra charge for lessons is determined by the college and the rate is assessed per semester. Required of majors and minors in music at most colleges. Fifteen one-half hour lessons per semester. Students may repeat this course for a maximum of 4 credits.

MUSC 1106 Concert Band, 0-1 credit
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Organization that performs a variety of concert band literature and is open to all students. No audition is required. Some instruments are available for student use. Concert each semester; spring tour. Three hours each week.

MUSC 1108 Concert Choir, 0-1 credit
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
A mixed chorus that studies and performs a variety of choral literature from classical to popular songs. No audition required. Concert(s) each semester and a choral festival in Spring Semester. A minimum of three hours per week. Students may repeat to a maximum of four credits.

MUSC 1109 Singing 101, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
The student will learn to develop the voice as an instrument and learn basic fundamentals of music as well as diversity of singing styles and music history. Opportunities to perform for peers and instructor will help develop students as performers.

MUSC 1110 Rock and Roll History, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6 and 7)
Study of popular American music, its musical elements, cultural perspectives, and historical developments. An emphasis is placed on the impact that African-American men and women had on its development. Attendance at a live performance is required.

MUSC 1111 Jazz History, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6 and 7)
An introductory course, designed to help students become familiar with and appreciate jazz as an important American art form. Jazz as a reflection of the evolution of American society. A historical overview will be used. Attendance at a live performance is required.

MUSC 1115 Music Theory I, 5 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Music Theory is an in-depth study of music and its historical and cultural development through music analysis and performance. Intended for students with prior performance experience in music, i. e., band, choir, etc. This course is required for music majors and/or minors.

MUSC 1120 Music Business: Marketing, Promotion, Publishing, Recording, 3 credits
An introduction to the music industry. Topics covered include contracts, business structures and basic business essentials, band names, publicity and advertising, and the role of agents and managers. Other topics included are music and theatre, arts administration, copyright, licensing, and recording.

MUSC 1125 Music Theory II, 5 credits
Prerequisite: “C” or better in MUSC 1115 or permission of instructor.
Continuation of Music 1115. Advanced study of scales, chords, notation chord grammar, ear training, and sight singing. An in-depth study of harmony including voice leading, harmonic progression, dominant seventh chord, leading-tone seventh chord, nondominant seventh chords, modulation and secondary dominants, and leading-tone chords. Required for music majors and/or minors.

MUSC 1146 Jazz Ensemble, 0-1 credit
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Concert ensemble that rehearses and performs a variety of jazz literature. Concerts each semester. Additional rehearsals may be required. Students may repeat this course to gain a maximum of 4 credits.

MUSC 1147 Musical Theatre Ensemble, 0-1 credit
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
An instrumental ensemble performing music to accompany the yearly musical production. This course is open to all students. Some instruments are available for student use. Performances and rehearsals are scheduled by the director. Students may repeat this course to gain a maximum of 4 credits.

MUSC 1148 Chamber Singers, 0-1 credit
(Meets MnTC Goal 6)
Prerequisites: Permission of Instructor by audition.
A small, mixed vocal ensemble that studies and performs a variety of choral literature for the chamber ensemble from classical to popular songs. Open by audition. Concerts each semester. Students may repeat this course to gain a maximum of 4 credits.

MUSC 1150 AFA Applied Lesson, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Students must be working on their Associate of Fine Arts in Music Degree.
Private instruction in music – vocal or instrumental for students pursuing the Associate of Fine Arts Degree in Music. All AFA in Music students will participate in a four (4)-semester jury process that prepares each student for the successful completion of the AFA degree and prepares the student for the audition process required for admission/transfer to a bachelor degree track.
(Required of majors and minors pursuing a degree in music at most colleges. Fifteen one-half hour lessons per semester. Students may repeat this course to earn a maximum of 4 credits. Extra charge for lessons is determined by the college and the rate is assessed per Semester.)

MUSC 2105 Applied Lesson, 2 credits
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
Private instruction in music—vocal or instrumental. Extra charge for lessons is determined by the college and the rate is assessed per semester. Required of majors and minors in music at most colleges. Fifteen one-hour lessons per semester. Students may repeat this course to earn a maximum of 8 credits.

MUSC 2150 AFA Applied Lesson, 2 credits
Prerequisite: Students must be working on their Associate of Fine Arts in Music Degree.
Private instruction in music – vocal or instrumental for students pursuing the Associate of Fine Arts Degree in Music. MUSC 2201 Music History and Literature I, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6 and 8)
Study of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods of music and their influence in history. Concert required. A required course for music majors and/or minors. Extensive listening. Three hours each week.

MUSC 2202 Music History and Literature II, 3 credits
(Meets MnTC Goal 6 and 8)
Study of Romantic, Impressionistic and Contemporary periods of music and their influence in history. A required course for music majors and/or minors. Extensive listening. Concert required. Three hours each week.

MUSC 2215 Advanced Music Theory I, 5 credits
Prerequisite: “C” or better in MUSC 1125 or permission of instructor.
Continuation of Music 1125. An in-depth study of
harmony including chromatic harmony, i.e., borrowed chords, Neapolitan 6th chords, augmented 6th chords, 9th, 11th and 13th chords, altered dominants, and chromatic mediants. Advanced study in ear training and sight-singing. A required course for music majors and/or minors.

MUSC 2225 Advanced Music Theory II, 5 credits
Prerequisite: “C” or better in MUSC 2215 or permission of instructor.
Continuation of Music 2215. An in-depth study of form in music: two-part binary, three-part ternary, two-voice eighteenth-century counterpoint, the fugue, variation technique, sonata f form, and rondo form. Also an in-depth study of music of the 20th century. A required course for music majors and/or minors.

MUSC 2299 Independent Study, 1-3 credits
Prerequisite: Two music courses successfully completed.
Designed to offer students the opportunity to do extensive reading or research on a specific topic in music.
